2. Mawi was born on September 29, in Adi Wahla, Ethiopia This is a small town on the border of Eritrea and Sudan.

3. Ethiopian Civil War Lasted from 1974 - 1991
Africa, in general, has suffered from artificial borders drawn by former imperial and colonial rulers & the civil war between Ethiopia and the Northern region was due to border issues

Increased poverty
Massive loss of life
Lack of stability within the government

5. Fighting between Ethiopian soldiers and Eritrean guerillas forced many families into Sudanese refugee camps.

6. He fled the fighting in Ethiopia with his family when he was three years old.
"And the way you do it is that you just pack your stuff up and if you are lucky to have some camels and mules, and maybe some donkeys, you ride on them."

7. In 1980 his family was “relocated” to a refugee camp in Sudan.

8. Sudan is host to many refugee caps because of its size and location.

9. For the next three years, 1980-1983, the Umsagata refugee camp in Sudan became his family's home.

In 2010, he released book one, The Third Harmony, of a fantasy trilogy for teenagers.
He currently lives in Chicago and is working on book two of his trilogy.
