2 Defining “machine” Machines make work easier
Machines alter how work is done, not the amount of work done

3 Input versus output Whatever effort you (or something else) applies to a machine is the work input. When the machine applies that work to the desired outcome, that is called the work output.

4 How does a machine make work easier?
Machines might change – 1) the amount of force needed, 2) the distance over which the work is done, or 3) The direction of the force

5 Quick check How does a single pulley make work easier?
How does a crowbar make work easier? How does an inclined plane make work easier?
