2 Roosevelt Is Inaugurated
Voters were so frustrated with Hoover’s inability to end the Great Depression that Franklin D. Roosevelt, democrat, defeated Hoover in a landslide election Roosevelt won the November 1932 presidential election. Unemployment continued to rise, bank runs increased. Section 1-10

3 Roosevelt’s Philosophy
Roosevelt promised Americans a New Deal. This new deal was a major turning point in American history. Marked an end to the view that government and the economy should be separate. .

4 Established the principle that the federal government bears the chief responsibility for the smooth running of the economy permanently increased the size and power of the federal government

5 Roosevelt brought a new style of leadership to the Presidency
He was an excellent communicator and frequently addressed the nation by radio known as “fireside chats” Roosevelt explained his policies in simple conversational terms and presented himself as an optimist in order to restore public confidence

7 The President’s wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, served as Roosevelt’s eyes and ears by traveling throughout the country, and later around the world. When the Bonus army marched on Washington DC Roosevelt sent his wife Eleanor to talk with the men and help calm the situation.

8 New Deal Legislation As Roosevelt took office, he called Congress into special session. He began to submit a flood of measures for Congressional approval. Virtually all of the bills he submitted in these First Hundred Days were enacted by Congress.

9 Roosevelt explained these New Deal measures in terms of the three R’s –Relief, Recovery, and Reform

10 Relief—actions designed to tide people over until the economy recovered.
The Banking Crisis—FDR called for a bank holiday, closing all of the nation’s banks Homeowners—The government passed legislation making emergency loans available

11 Unemployed— Roosevelt favored “work-relief”, giving people emergency jobs
WPA- created jobs by hiring artists, writers, and musicians to paint murals, produce plays, and create other artworks CCC—gave jobs to young men such as planting trees and cleaning up forests.

12 Recovery—measures designed to restore the economy by increasing incentives to produce and by rebuilding people’s purchasing power. NRA-asked business to voluntarily follow codes which set standard prices, production limits, and minimum wages AAA—raise farm prices and bought surpluses from farmers

13 Reform—measures that were based on the belief that government should protect individuals against risks that they could not handle on their own. TVA—built 21 government owned dams along the Tennessee River controlling floods and producing electricity

14 Social Security Act– It provided workers with unemployment insurance, old age pensions, and insurance if they died early.

15 Support of Roosevelt and his New Deal began to fade in 1935. 

16 Roosevelt used deficit spending to pay for his programs. 
He abandoned a balanced budget and borrowed money to pay for his programs. The American Liberty League was created as business leaders and anti-New Deal politicians from both parties organized to oppose the New Deal. Section 3-6

Left-wing Democratic senator Huey Long proposed taking property from the rich and dividing it up amongst the poor.  Father Charles Coughlin, a Catholic priest in Detroit, gave further support to Huey Long through his popular radio broadcast. Section 3-7

Dr. Francis Townsend, a former public health official, proposed that the federal government pay citizens over the age of 60 a pension of $200 a month.  Section 3-8

19 The New Deal operated to balance competing economic interests. 
The Legacy of the New Deal The New Deal had limited success, but gave Americans a stronger sense of security and stability.  The New Deal operated to balance competing economic interests.  The New Deal’s mediating role established the broker state, which helped work out conflicts among different interests.
