Halogens are the group of non-metals found in group 7 of the Periodic Table.
Write the halogens below, with the lightest at the top: F…………………………. C………………………….. B………………………….. I………………………….. A…………………………. Halogens can react with metals to form compounds called metal halides. Example Sodium + Chlorine Sodium chloride Note that the n in the halogen changes to a d in the halide. Fill in the gaps in these reactions: Iron + Chlorine ……………………. ……………………………. Magnesium + Chlorine ………………………………….. …………………………… Copper + Bromine …………………………… ……………………………….. Zinc + Fluorine ……………… ………………………………… ………………… + Iodine Silver iodide …………………………………….. + ……………………………….. Aluminium bromide Tin + ……………………………….. Tin fluoride ……………………….. + Chlorine Lithium chloride …………………………. + Bromine Calcium ……………………………. ……………………………………. + ……………………………………. Mercury fluoride Compounds are very different to the elements that made them. Both sodium and chlorine are poisonous but if you join them together you make sodium chloride – which is the salt you put on your chips!

Displacement Reactions
Meet Chris Chlorine and Ian Iodine. They are both in the Halogen family but they act very differently. Chris is very reactive. He likes to play football and get into fights. Ian is very unreactive. He enjoys flower arranging and visiting his Grandma. Ian Iodine (wimp) Chris Chlorine (hard-man) Ian iodine has got himself a girlfriend, Irene Iron. Unfortunately, one of Chris Chlorine’s other hobbies is stealing the girlfriends of wimpier boys. As he is more reactive than Ian he steals Irene. Iron Iodide Chlorine Iron Chloride Iodine This type of reaction is called a displacement reaction. Because chlorine is more reactive it has displaced iodine from the compound. Try these: Iron iodide + Fluorine Copper bromide + Chlorine Silver chloride + Fluorine Sodium Iodide + Bromine Lead Chloride + iodine Magnesium fluoride + Bromine
