Types of Reactions Single Replacement
2
Single Replacement “Player” – The anion is bonded to a cation, but becomes bonded to a different cation. Reactants = 1 element(s) and 1 compound(aq) Products = 1 element(s) and 1 compound(aq)
3
Single Replacement A + BC B + AC A (s) (element) BC (aq) (compound)
B (s) (element) AC (aq) (compound)
4
Single Replacement Not all reactions take place.
Use your Reactivity Table to determine if the reaction takes place or not. The higher up on the list a metal is, the more reactive it is.
5
Single Replacement “A” must be higher on the list than “B” for the reaction to take place. A + BC B + AC If A is higher on the list, the reaction happens as shown. If B is higher on the list, then the equation becomes: A + BC N.R.
6
Single Replacement Example:
aluminum + copper chloride aluminum chloride and copper Use your Metal Reactivity Chart. Does Aluminum lie above Copper?
7
Single Replacement Example: 2Al(s) + 3CuCl2(aq) 2 AlCl3(aq) + 3Cu(s)
2Al + 3Cu Cl Al3+ + 6Cl- + 3Cu 2Al + 3Cu Al Cu
8
Single Replacement Example: Aluminum + Sodium Chloride
Use your Metal Reactivity Chart. Does Aluminum lie above Sodium? NO! Al(s) NaCl(aq) N.R.
