Displacement Reactions
2
Which metal here is the most reactive?
How do you know? Put the metals in order from most to least reactive?
3
The Reactivity Series of Metals
Some metals are more reactive than others. The reactivity series is a list of metals IN ORDER from the most to the least reactive,
4
What is a Displacement Reaction?
“Displace” means to “SHIFT” In a displacement reaction a MORE reactive metal will SHIFT a LESS reactive metal from a solution and take its place. Example: Copper and Silver Nitrate Which is the most reactive metal, Cu or Ag?
5
Copper and Silver Nitrate Reaction
Copper is MORE reactive than silver so it will SHIFT the silver out of the compound and take it’s place. Word Equation Copper + Silver Nitrate Copper Nitrate + Silver Symbol Equation Cu + AgNO Cu(NO3)2 + Ag Balanced Symbol Equation Cu + 2AgNO Cu(NO3) Ag
6
A Spectator Ion In the reaction above, the nitrate ion is present as a reactant and a product but DOES NOT take part in the reaction. It is called a spectator ion.
7
Your turn to predict if a reaction will occur
Magnesium and Lead Nitrate? Zinc and Lead Nitrate? YES to both What is the spectator ion in each reaction? The nitrate ion
8
What about Copper and Lead Nitrate?
This reaction won’t happen because copper is below lead on the reactivity series.
