Parabolas The St. Louis Arch- like a “U” shape of a quadratic function which opens downward The curving main cables of a suspension bridge closely follow a parabola

Ellipses Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capital building is elliptic. John Quincy Adams was the one to discover that he could easily eavesdrop on others conversations located near focal points. When tilting a glass of water the surface of the liquid creates an elliptical outline

Circles A Ferris wheel and a plate are both examples of circles

Hyperbolas The cooling tower of a steam power plant has the shape of a hyperboloid, as well as the St. Louis Science Center (on right)
