Lesson 7 – The Nature of the Holy Spirit
Study on the Godhead Lesson 7 – The Nature of the Holy Spirit
2
Review of lesson 6 In 1 John 3:1-2, John states that Jesus now has a body different than our current body, but when He comes again, we will shed this body and take on the body He now has So, what is the future nature of Jesus? Well, it will be the same nature as He currently has – whatever that is
3
Review of lesson 6 But there’s one more aspect of Jesus’ future nature that we should also consider, and it’s something many (most?) Christians consider incorrectly 1 Corinthians 15:23-28 shows that Jesus will turn over the kingdom to God and then Himself be subject to God, just as we will be as co-heirs with Christ
4
And He decided that we were worth that price
Review of lesson 6 That, then, is the ultimate cost to Christ of dying on the cross for our salvation When Jesus sat down to “count the cost” of coming to Earth, it meant that He could never again hold the position He held before His incarnation And He decided that we were worth that price
5
The nature of the holy spirit
In this lesson, we will look at the nature of the Holy Spirit Let’s start out with a question that looks deceptively simple: Is the Holy Spirit God? Please answer yes or no and back up your position
6
The nature of the holy spirit
Yes, of course the Holy Spirit is God!! Matthew 28 (the Great Commission) 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 (discussing Spiritual gifts) Acts 5:3-4 (Ananias and Sapphira) That’s just a few – there are other passages you could certainly reference as well
7
The nature of the holy spirit
Since the Holy Spirit is God, then we know that there are certain attributes God possesses that the Holy Spirit would then also possess Unbounded by Space (Omnipresent) Unbounded in Knowledge (Omniscient) Unbounded in Power (Omnipotent) * Unbounded in Moral Purity (Holy) Unbounded by Time (Eternal)
8
The nature of the holy spirit
Does the Holy Spirit have some sort of physical form? What does the name imply? So, what about at Jesus baptism? The Holy Spirit descended as a dove and sat on Jesus shoulder, right? (Luke 3:22 – “in bodily form” !!) It seems that the Holy Spirit has a form as needed, but for the most part, He retains His spiritual form
9
The nature of the holy spirit
So what does the Bible tell us about the Holy Spirit, besides He does have a bodily form? He dwells in us – Romans 8:11, 1 Corinthians 3:16 Why? He is our Helper (John 16:5-15) He is our seal (Ephesians 1:13-14) He is our pledge of inheritance (Ephesians 1:13-14) He knows the mind of God – 1 Corinthians 2:11 He brings about the will of God – 1 Corinthians 12:11
10
The nature of the holy spirit
He serves as a mouthpiece for God – Acts 8:29, 10:19, 11:12 He is our comforter, advocate, counselor In teaching – John 14:26 In testifying – John 15:26 In convicting – John 16:8 In making truth known – John 16:13 He is instrumental in our rebirth – John 3:5 He sanctifies us – 1 Peter 1:2 He intercedes for us – Romans 8:26-27
