Institution Assessment Exercise
Designed to help communicate an institution’s capacity for building digital collections Should help you to think about institutional requirements for digital collection building The online questionnaire has 7 sections: Institution Information Information Technology Infrastructure Digital Collections: Administration and Management Digital Collections: Selection and Acquisition Digital Collections: Access Digital Collections: Preservation Digital Collections: Rights Approx minutes to complete From the OceanTeacher Classroom, open the link titled, IODE/DAM Workshop: Institution Assessment

Replication of Service Exercise
We need to verify that the materials being considered for digitization haven’t already been done by someone else. If so, is access suitable to your needs Example: Bulletin of Marine Science Source: OceanDocs Query: title=Bulletin of Marine Science Results: 0 Source: Google Scholar Query: phrase=Bulletin of Marine Science Results: Appears it has been index by a number of abstracting services. No fulltext evident. Assignment: Conduct an environmental scan and search for digital copies of your materials Use your own strategy (think carefully about where you search) Record the name of source, search query, and results for each source Need to repeat for each query and each example Approx. 45 minutes to complete From the OceanTeacher Classroom, open the link titled, Environmental Scan

Citation Analysis Exercise
Citation Analysis is a major area of bibliometric research When one author cites another author, a relationship is established. Uses citations in scholarly works to establish links. Assignment: Example: Glynn, P. W. Use the “Publish or Perish” citation analysis software to evaluate your sample materials. Download, install and run the software: Create citation queries for your materials then run each query using the software. For each query, record the following at minimum: No. papers No.. Citations No. Years Cites/year May help decide whether to digitize. More likely, it will help assess the future impact of digitization on your materials Approx minutes to complete From the OceanTeacher Classroom, open the link titled, Citation Analysis

Assessment Collection Development Policy
Taken from: International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions Section on Acquisition and Collection Development, 2001 The library’s primary task is to select, maintain, and provide access to relevant and representative information resources. Due to technological developments, libraries are, in the main, moving from holdings (‘just in case’) to access (‘just in time’) strategies. This implies that collecting policies are significantly changing and that libraries need to disseminate widely information on their collecting policies. VIETNAM Nha-Trang

Assessment Collection Assessment
Traditional collection assessment is the process of evaluating how well the collection development program meets the policies of the institution and the information needs of its user community. The need to accommodate for digital solutions Reformatting Decision Analysis Tool – Designed to help make decisions about investing in reformatting efforts. At this stage, we aren’t necessarily trying to determine the technology solution. Why? Class is going to evaluate this tool. First time ever evaluated. Why? Sevastopol, Ukraine

Assessment RDAT Exercise:
Complete a row in the RDAT spreadsheet for each of the collections you wish to assess. You’ll need to rely on information gathered from previous exercises.

Assessment DAAT University of London Computer Centre, Digital Asset Assessment Tool (DAAT) Project DAAT aimed to produce and test a Digital Asset Assessment Tool which would enable institutions which had already identified their digital assets to assess which of those assets were at greatest preservation risk, and make informed decisions, informed by both value and risk, on how to deploy possibly limited resources on digital preservation across the institution. Funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) supports United Kingdom post-16 and higher education and research by providing leadership in the use of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) in support of learning, teaching, research and administration.
15
Assessment Stewardship of Digital Assets
In the U.S., Northeast Document Conservation Center, in conjunction with PALINET, SOLINET, Amigos Library Services, and the OCLC Western Service Center, and with the generous support of the National Endowment for the Humanities, developed a two-day workshop focusing on sustaining digital collections. A faculty of digital experts taught an interactive, hands-on workshop at four locations across the country. This toolkit gathers important information on the issues relevant to digital preservation that were covered in the workshop. This information will introduce users to the broad spectrum of considerations, assist them in developing an understanding of where the institution stands in the process, and help develop a written plan for digital preservation.

Assessment LIFE (Lifecycle Information for E-Literature)
A JISC-funded project which aims to apply the theory of life cycle collection management to digital collections. The project will provide practical information for all institutions who have an interest in collecting and preserving digital material. BULGARIA. Rila monastery, December 2006
