X.3 Solving Systems of Linear Equations by Elimination

How to Use Elimination Multiply (if needed) one or both equations by a constant so that at least one pair of like terms has the same or opposite coefficients. Add or subtract the equations to eliminate one of the variables. Solve the resulting equation for the remaining variable. Substitute your answer from Step 3 into one of the original equations to solve for the other variable.

Example 5 Alex buys 4 cakes and 9 pies for $190. Kaylie buys 5 cakes and 6 pies for $185. Write and solve (using elimination) a system of linear equations to find the cost of each cake and pie.
