Learning Objectives: By the end of this lesson students will be able to... Define atmosphere and symbolism. Apply this knowledge by analyzing a poem.

2 Describe the feelings that come to mind after reading these words:
Sorrow Darkness Dreary Bleak Grave Lost Stern Stillness Ghost Melancholy

3 How is the author feeling? Is he alone or with other people?
All of these words are from a very famous poem. Make some guesses about the setting and atmosphere of the poem such as: What time of day is it? What time of year? How is the author feeling? Is he alone or with other people?

4 Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”

10 So…we could say… …that Edgar Allan Poe sets the scene and creates an ATMOSPHERE by... …or that, Poe uses the raven to SYMBOLIZE… Directions for Your Assignment: (1) Complete your pre-writing chart (Line/Technique/Effect) and then (2) Draft a one-page analysis of Poe’s use of atmosphere and symbolism in “The Raven.”
