2 Ne. 31:3 the Lord ". giveth light unto the understanding
2 Ne. 31:3 the Lord "...giveth light unto the understanding." Joseph Smith expanded this principle by saying, "a person may profit by noticing the first intimations of the spirit of revelation; for instance, when you feel pure intelligence flowing into you, it may give you sudden strokes of ideas, so that by noticing it, you may find it fulfilled the same day or soon; those things that were presented unto your minds by the Spirit of God, will come to pass; and thus by learning the Spirit of God and understanding it, you may grow into the principle of revelation, until you become perfect in Christ Jesus."

2 Ne. 32:7 "The revelation that restrains is one of the most common forms of revelation. It often comes by surprise, when we have not asked for revelation or guidance on a particular subject, but if we are keeping the commandments and living in tune with the spirit a restraining force will steer us away from things we should not do."
