1. القديس يوحنا الدرجى St. John of the ladder
فى السادسة عشرة من عمره تتلمذ على الأب مرتيروس أحد شيوخ دير جبل سيناء وفى يوم ترهبه قال عنه شيخ " ستراتيجيوس" أنه سيبقى "أحد أنوار العالم" وتنبأ عنه يوحنا الساباوى وانستاسيوس رئيس دير جبل سيناء آنذاك بأنه سوف يصبح رئيساً للدير.
He became a disciple at the age of 16 at the hands of Fr. Marteros, one of the elders of mount Sinai monastery. On the day of his anointment, elder “Strategious” said about him that he will become “one of the world’s lights”. John el Sabawi and Anastasious, the head of mount Sinai monastery back then, predicted that he will become the head of the monastery.

2. فى سن العشرين اعتزل متوحداً فى بادية " تولا" قضى 40 سنة فى خلوته مجاهداً جهاد التوبة والصلاة مختبر فنون الحرب اللا منظورة وحلاوة مناجاة الله واكتسب موهبة الصلاة الدائمة ومحادثة الملائكة. فى نهاية الأربعين سنة انتخب رئيساً لدير جبل سيناء وبحسب رواية انستاسيوس السينائى ظهر النبى موسى بنفسه لدى تنصيبه وصار يخدم الضيوف.
At the age of 20, he isolated himself as a hermit in the dessert of “Tola”, whereby he spent 40 years striving the strife of repentance and prayer, experiencing the various unseen wars and the sweetness of conversing with God. He acquired the gift of continuous prayer and conversing angels. By the end of those 40 years, he was chosen as the head of mount Sinai monastery. According to the account of Anastasius of Sinai, prophet Moses himself appeared on the day of his anointment and served the guests.

3. يقال أنه انقذ تلميذه موسى من الموت حين أرسله فى خدمة وعند الظهيرة نام فى ظل صخرة كبيرة واثناء نومه سمع صوت معلمه يوقظه فقفز فوراً من تحت الصخرة التى هوت حالما ابتعد. وكان القديس يوحنا قد رأى رؤيا نبهته الى ان تلميذه فى خطر فقام وصلى من اجله.
It is said that St. John of the ladder saved his disciple Moses from death when he sent him out to run an errand. At noon, the disciple slept under the shade of a big rock and during his sleep, he heard the voice of his master awakening him, so he instantly jumped off, right before the rock fell. It happened that the saint saw a vision which alerted him that his disciple was in danger, so he rose up and prayed for him.

4. أقوال القديس يوحنا الدرجى St. John of the ladder Sayings:
الطاعة قبر للمشيئة وقيامة للاتضاع فالميت لا يناقض أو يباحث لا فى الصالحات ولا فى ما يحسب أنه من غير الصالحات. لأن الذى اسلم إليه الإنسان روحه حباً بالله سوف يجيب عنه بشأنها كلها.
St. John of the ladder Sayings:
As the dead does not object or argue either about goodness or things that are not considered good, obedience is a grave for will and a resurrection for humbleness. When one submits his soul out of love to God, God will then explain to Him all the reasons behind His doings.

5. إذا قمنا نصلى قامت علينا تلك الأفكار النجسة والممتنع النطق بها لكنها تنصرف حالاً إذا تابعنا صلاتنا لأنها لا تحارب محاربيها
If we rise to pray, impure and unspeakable thoughts rises against us; yet they instantly depart if we continued our prayers, for they do not fight their fighters.

6. ابتداء عدم الغيظ صمت الشفتين مع اضطراب القلب ووسطه صمت الأفكار مع اضطراب نفسى خفيف أما كماله فسكون راسخ وسط هبوب رياح نجسه
The first level of avoiding provocation is the silence of the lips with the disturbance of the heart. The second level is the silence of thoughts and slight psychological disturbance. The last and perfect level is solid serenity amidst the blowing of impure winds.

7. الوداعة هى سكون النفس وتقبلها للإهانات والكرامات بحال واحد على السواء
Gentleness is the serenity of the soul and its acceptance of both humiliations and dignity.

8. من احتكاك الحجر والحديد تتولد النار ومن كثرة الكلام والمزاح يتولد الكذب .
The friction of stone and iron generates fire and the frequency of words and jokes generates lies.

9. من يتخلى عن الأموال من أجل الله فهو عظيم
أما من يتخلى عن مشيئته فهو قديس
الأول يأخذ مئة ضعف أموالاً أو مواهب
أما الآخر فيرث حياة أبدية.
He who gives away money for God’s sake is great, whereas he who gives away his will is a saint. The former takes hundred fold of money or talents, whereas the latter inherits eternal life.

10. من يذم ذاته لا يبدى أتضاعاً اذ كيف لا يحتمل الانسان ذاته ؟ بل من يعيره غيره
ولا يُنقص محبته له.
He who condemns himself does not show humbleness, as how can one not endure himself? But the humble person is the one who is condemned by another, yet his love for his condemner is not affected.

11. فقال له الشيخ الكلى الحكمة :
عاتب شيخ أحد الأخوة على تكبره معاتبة روحية فأجاب الأخ : اغفر لى يا أبى فإنى لست متكبراً
فقال له الشيخ الكلى الحكمة :
يا ولدى أى برهان تعطينا على تكبرك أوضح من قولك
" لست متكبراً "
An elderly gave a gentle spiritual reproach to one of the brethren on his pride.
The brother replied: “forgive me, father, but I am not proud”.
The wise elderly then said: “my son, what clearer proof do you give us than saying: “I am not proud”.

12. إن كففنا عن إدانة القريب والحكم عليه، لن نخشى أفكار التجديف لأن إدانة القريب من شأنها أن تبعث فينا الأفكار.
If we stopped condemning our neighbor and judging him, we won’t fear blasphemous thoughts, because condemning the neighbor can generate in us those thoughts.

13. النفس البسيطة قرينة التواضع أما النفس الخبيثة فابنة للكبرياء
A simple soul is next to humbleness whereas a malice soul is the daughter of pride.

14. إسأل بدموع ، أطلب بطاعة ، أقرع بصبر " فأن من يسأل بالدموع يأخذ
ومن يطلب بالطاعة يجد ومن يقرع بالصبر يفتح له "
Ask in tears, request with obedience, and knock with patience. “For he who asks in tears, takes. And he who requests in obedience, finds. And he who knocks patiently, shall have the door opened for him”.

15. أذكر فى كلامك دائما انك تخطئ بما يخطئ به الآخرون وهكذا لن يُعوزك يوما اتضاع عظيم.
Remember always, while talking, that you sin as others and thus you will never be in need of great humbleness.

16. الوداعة صخرة قائمة على شاطئ بحر الغضب تكسر كافة الأمواج التى تلطمها ولا تتحرك أو تضطرب البته .
Gentleness is a rock on the shore of an angry sea. It breaks all the waves which hit it, yet it does not move or get troubled.
