Over ~35,000 in the Greater Cincinnati area Muslim presence since early-mid 1900s Large wave of immigrants in late ’60 to ‘70s Initial Immigrants primarily from South Asia Middle East Initial wave highly educated and respected professional fields – doctors, engineers, educators, etc Current wave of immigrants more diverse

Mosque/Masjid Full-time Islamic schools Educational Institutes/Academies Muslim Student Associations Halal grocers/ restaurants Social Services Advocacy/Political Educational Outreach Arts/cultural Islamic Chamber of Commerce Networking groups Relief organizations Types of Muslim-American Institutions: Listed in order of importance to, and utility by, Muslims: Mosques (masajid) Full-time Islamic schools Educational Institutes/Academies (i.e.. Zaytuna Institute, Nawawi Foundation, etc.) Muslim Student Associations Halal grocers/restaurants. Halal means “Islamically permissible,” specifically in this case with regards to meat and therefore analogous to the term “kosher” in the Jewish tradition Social Service agencies (those dealing with family violence, etc.) Political/Advocacy organizations (i.e.. Reassure: support, justice & protection available Provide: info on hate crime policies & procedures Respond: to community concerns Invest: take time to introduce yourself and work Visit: community centers, mosque, churches, events. Liaison: connect with community & religious leaders. Invite: community to academies, associations & events to have a Muslim American voice at the table To further enhance the relationship and cooperation between the police and Muslims or Arab community we suggest that you: Reassure the community that support and protection is available and a priority. Provide information on what constitutes a hate crime, and policies and procedures to follow if victim of a hate crime. Respond and be open to community concerns. Invest the time and effort to introduce yourself and personalize yourself. Whenever possible, in non-crisis situations, visit community centers, mosque, churches, events. Make liaisons with and connect with the community and religious leaders. Invite the community to police academies, associations and other events.
