3 Dada Shakespeare: Final Product introduction
What is it? We are going to make a sonnet that will be used for a song with the digital music engineering class Then they will give it to the digital imaging class to make an album cover for it Then the video production class will make a video for it Everyone will use elements of DADA for their part of the project “Hipser Shakespeare”

4 “How to Make a Dadist Poem” by Tristan Tzara
Take a newspaper. Take some scissors. Choose from this paper an article the length you want to make your poem. Cut out the article. Next carefully cut out each of the words that make up this article and put them all in a bag. Shake gently. Next take out each cutting one after the other. Copy conscientiously in the order in which they left the bag. The poem will resemble you. And there you are--an infinitely original author of charming sensibility, even though unappreciated by the vulgar herd.

5 “How to Make a Dadist Sonnet” by Alexia Wilson*
Take a newspaper or a copy of Shakespeare’s works. Take some scissors. Cut out several lines from the article or from the Bard’s works. Next carefully cut out each of the words that make up this article and put them all in a bag. Shake gently. Next take out each cutting one after the other. Copy conscientiously in the order in which they left the bag But follow the rules of a sonnet. The poem will resemble you. And there you are--an infinitely original author of charming sensibility, even though unappreciated by the vulgar herd.

6 Dada Shakespeare: How to make a dadist sonnet?
steps take a bag & a pair of scissors Take a random page from the pile* Cut out the lines, then cut out the words Put the words into your bag Carefully copy them follow the line and syllable rules of a sonnet! Boom! Your shakespearean dadist poem! “The Pile” is whatever you want the kiddos to choose from. You can alter what is in it or where they should get it from.

7 Dada Shakespeare: How to make a dadist sonnet?
Sonnet rules -14 lines -Iambic pentameter = 10 Syllables per line -Will have to ignore rhyming rules! But if you are able to->awesome! -3 quatrains and a couplet

8 Quick check! what are the steps in making a dada sonnet?
Tell your neighbor to make sure you are correct! Be prepared to share out!

9 Dada Shakespeare: Let’s make a dadist sonnet!
Quatrain 1: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ x ‘ x ‘ x ‘ x ‘ x ‘ Here is where you will pick out some words randomly and place them in by their syllable. You can have a student or 2 help (1 pick, 1 write). If you have a smart board or promethean board, you could have them write directly on the slideshow. If you pick a last word that has too many, you could either hyphenate for the next quatrain (awkward possibly) OR throw that word back in and pick again until you get the syllables to fit Another option would be to pick the 40 syllables out first then arrange in a way that makes more sense, but that is a little less Dada Image from:

13 Quick check! What are the parts of a sonnet?
Tell your neighbor to make sure you are correct! Be prepared to share out!

14 Dada Shakespeare: now you make a dadist sonnet!
steps take a bag & a pair of scissors Take a random page or 2 from the pile* Cut out the lines, then cut out the words Put the words into your bag Carefully copy them follow the line and syllable rules of a sonnet! Boom! Your shakespearean dadist poem! Need to have scissors, copied pages of Shakepeare’s works or newspapers (or both!), and paper bags for the students. You may also want to give them a printed out template. See resources under this lesson (#4 Dada Shakespeare) on CTE’s website lesson plans.

15 Dada Shakespeare: group critique of dadist sonnets!
steps Get into groups of 4 Take out your poem Pass it to the person on your right Quietly read the sonnet Fill out your score card Repeat until all critiqued Pass forward the one with the highest score You could make copies of the finalists for students to silently critique, or you could do a performance critique of the finalists, as shown on the next slides.

16 Dada Shakespeare: group critique of dadist sonnets!
Score card Scale of 1-5 (5 is best) Categories Beauty? Message clarity? Message depth? Follows rules of a sonnet? If the poem is so random it doesn’t make sense, that would be a 1 on clarity, but it may still have depth within some of the lines. This is purely subjective, of course. The only one that is objective is the 4th one, which also shows whether or not the students understood the basic rules of a sonnet (minus the rhyme scheme of course).

17 Dada Shakespeare: class critique of dadist sonnets!
steps Finalists will be read out-loud Teacher or semi-finalists? Whole class Scores each poem according to score card After all are read, pass on title of favorite one Winning sonnet will move on to the music class for them to use for their song! You may wish to have the teacher read them if you want the students to vote anonymously or have the students present themselves. You may also wish to send off a few or several “winners”. It all depends on your school and your collaboration’s needs. If many students are making songs, then send off however many sonnets the other class(es) need.  Picture is from presentermedia.com
