Brenchley and Matfield CE (Aided) Primary School
Year 1 Curriculum Newsletter – Term 1 I hope you have had an amazing summer with lots of good memories and special times. Hopefully you have had a smooth start back to the school year and we wish you a very warm welcome to KS1 and Year 1. This is big transition for your little ones so please share any issues that you or they have, and we can try and make sure it is as happy a time as possible. The most important thing you can do at the moment is take time to share books with them as often as possible and talk as much as possible with them about anything and everything to improve their vocabulary. Each child will have a weekly show and share slot that will remain on the same day to help you remember I will send this home separately this is to help them share and be confident speaking in front of other people. Please keep an eye on the notice board for any updates. Mrs Dignan and Mrs Ledger. English We will be working on our handwriting and exploring how to improve this through forming our letters and then words focusing on Capital Letters and writing sentences with spacing and full stops. We will be using stories as a basis and labelling and retelling stories and developing our fine motor skills as well as daily phonics work. Topic Work This term, we will be learning about our local environment focusing on Brenchley. We will be looking at maps and our immediate area. British Values We are looking at our school values and what they mean to us in year. We will explore people who help us both every day and in specific situations. The McMillan Coffee fundraiser will be on 29th September and we look forward to seeing you in class that day. Please provide cakes. Art In Art we will be looking at colour mixing and painting and looking at nature through the seasons which we will do once every term . Reading Together we will work to help your child progress in this area this year. Please try and spend time to help your children access and enjoy their reading daily as it really is the most important skill. Little and often is the key. Maths We will be starting to work on the Inspire Maths programme. This is an acclaimed mastery approach based on the Singaporean method. We will be working within 10 and doing lots around this. Please help your child by working with numbers in everyday life and enforcing all the ways to make and write these numbers. Science It is Physics until Christmas and we will be using toys to help our learning . Each child will need an empty plastic bottle with a sports cap. If you can please send one in named as soon as possible. We also need 6 empty shoe boxes if you have any to spare. If you have any magnetix – it would be great if we could have them in school later in the term for a couple of weeks when we are looking at magnets. We will also be building marble runs and if we can get some guttering we will try and make one outside so again please send this our way if you have any lying around! Computing This term, the children will learn to log on to the computers, save, open and retrieve their work. They will also be learning to use a drawing programme. RE In RE, we will exploring the question “What do Christians believe God is like?” We will do this through exploring bible stories, linking it to school life and looking at what parables are. PPA will be on a Wednesday afternoon for Terms 1,2 and 3 and will be covered by Mrs Markham (French), Mrs Sparkhall (music specialist) and Premier Sports (PE providers). Children should come to school in uniform and will go home in their PE kits. The expectation is that PE kits come back to school as soon as possible; as always children need their PE kits in school every day. Homework will be set on a Thursday to be handed in the following Tuesday. Spellings will be sent out on Fridays and tested the following Friday *** Phonics meeting 22nd September *** Can you help? If you are able to spare time to help I would love to have you regularly or to help on trips out and about!. Please get in touch.
