EOSC MODEL Pasquale Pagano CNR - ISTI

2
To define a reference architecture
The goal A ref. arch. models the abstract architectural elements in the domain of interest independent of the technologies, protocols, and products that are used to implement a specific solution for the domain It shows what is involved in realizing the modelled entities, while staying independent of any particular solution but instead applies to a class of solutions To define a reference architecture A ref. arch. is not a concrete architecture It generally specifies components and their relationships in sufficient detail but it does not enable direct implementation and deployment
3
Characterised by the Emergent Behaviour
The domain of interest EOSC must be a facilitator of Open Science processes federated and globally accessible across disciplines and geographical borders inclusive to build on existing capacity and expertise ensure a large degree of freedom regarding implementation It has to be more than the sum of the aggregated systems Characterised by the Emergent Behaviour The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no

Actors The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no

6 Actor Roles Use functions and tools to perform their domain specific research activities and to collaborate Develop new analytical models, new processes and tools to analyse data and derive knowledge Develop services for scientists by understanding their requirements and the Open Science vision Operate and provide access to their own portfolio of services according to declared SLAs Provide access to computational, storage and network resources, according to declared SLAs Facilitate the operation, assistance and quality assurance of the EOSC system and the coordination among its different stakeholders The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no

6 Actor Roles These users
operate with different types of resources and demand different services and working environments Scientists and developer scientists need services to produce research artifacts (including methods and tools) and need virtual research environments to support their multidisciplinary collaboration Developers of services often demand for access to appropriate platforms, including those providing facilitated access to computational and storage resources These user operate with different types of resources and they demand different services and working environments. While scientists and developer scientists need services to produce research artifacts (including methods and tools) and need virtual research environments to support their multidisciplinary collaboration, developers of services often demand for access to appropriate platforms, including those providing facilitated access to computational and storage resources. Abstract Class of Resources
Scientists research asset / artifacts inclusive of papers, datasets, scientific software, scientific workflows, notebooks, compound “research objects” virtual research environment specifically set up for supporting any research question / endeavor / goal Developer Scientists scientific software that is almost daily produced, usually developed in the form of scripts / small programs and non-necessarily following strong software engineering practices, likely developed by non-professional computer scientists Service Developers Software that is produced, published, and managed according the FAIR principles EOSC is expected to deliver Managers Service that includes all the functions exploited to deliver, monitor, and orchestrate the EOSC system Policies and Procedures defined to govern the EOSC system SLA used to define the level of service expected from the service provider Service Providers Scientific service that is made accessible according to the policies and SLA EOSC is expected to deliver Infrastructure Providers Computational and storage resources that are made accessible according to the policies and SLA EOSC is expected to deliver The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no

14
Open Discussion and Questions
Class of users are identified according to the EOSC vision and the expected emergent behaviour. Do you perceive the need to further specialize those classes? Scientists is the class of users including those that have to be guided towards and Open Science journey. Do you perceive the need to specialize this class and partition the collection of services required to support their needs? Developer Scientists is the class of users that may exploit the EOSC system to enhance their research activity significantly. Do you perceive the need to add additional class of services to support their needs? The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no
15
Open Discussion and Questions
Class of users are characterised by different management services Do you perceive the need to further specialize that class of services? The same class of Management services may require specialization according to the class of users Do you endorse this approach? The same class of Management services may be operated by different stakeholders while serving different class of users The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no
