2 Interpret the quote. What does it mean?
Put it in your own words.

3 Thesis Statements

4 - is a road map for the paper; it tells your reader what you will prove
- tells your reader how you will prove the “what” from above - makes a claim that others might dispute - is usually a single sentence (sometimes two) toward the end of your introduction that presents your argument to the reader.

5 Fear is the enemy of logic because the only way to combat it is by using intelligent thought to disprove the fears that grip society. While Henry Maclemore proves that fear can lead one to rash decisions, John Proctor rebels against the court and shows the power intellect has over fear.

15 Thesis Peer Edit

16 1) Does the thesis interpret the critical lens?
2) Does it connect The Crucible and the second text to the interpretation? 3) Does it answer the question, “What is the essay going to prove?” 4) Is the thesis precise? Is the language straightforward and clear?

17 How to write an introduction…

18 Purpose: By the end of this lesson, you will understand how to write a complete and focused introduction.

19 General (topic of paper) Specific (idea about topic)

20 General

21 Hook This is the first thing I will read. Make it count. It should make me want to continue reading. This will always address the topic of the paper. This will be your most general statement in your intro. Elaborate on your hook in the following sentence(s).

22 Hook No No’s! - Define a word. Leave Webster’s out of this.
- Grandiose statement. “In all of literature…” - Dumb questions - Quotes– unless you avoid cliché. Make sure you discuss the quote. - One word

23 Intense fear, usually of the unknown, can quickly spread throughout a society and reach a level of mass hysteria; under the influence of fear, people often do irrational things.

24 Specific

25 Intro for Critical Lens
In a critical lens essay (which is the only essay on the Regents), you must have the following additional information in the introduction:

26 Hook State quote Interpret quote- put it in your own words Agree/disagree with the quote (w/out using “I”) Include title and author’s full name (use last name after this) for both texts. Punctuate correctly. A one or two sentence thesis statement that addresses: What you will argue How you will argue it

27 Examples (Crucible)

28 Intense fear, usually of the unknown, can quickly spread throughout a society and reach a level of mass hysteria; under the influence of fear, people often do irrational things. Frank Sinatra once said “Fear is the enemy of logic.” Fear causes people to do things they normally would not. Clearly Sinatra is correct. Throughout United States history alone, mass fears have included the Salem Witch Trials, McCarthyism, and Muslims after the September 11 attacks. The Crucible by Arthur Miller and “Culture of Fear: Poetry Professor Becomes Terror Suspect” both exemplify fears that reach a level of mass hysteria. Fear is the enemy of logic because the only way to combat it is by using intelligent thought to disprove the fears that grip society. While Henry Maclemore proves that fear can lead one to rash decisions, John Proctor rebels against the court and shows the power intellect has over fear.

35 Example 2

36 Fear is a common issue that is prevalent in everyday life and culture
Fear is a common issue that is prevalent in everyday life and culture. Frank Sinatra once said “Fear is the enemy of logic.” Sinatra was explaining that sometimes people give into fear because of their own ignorance or lack of common logic on the subject. It is easy to agree with Sinatra since this issue is seen as some of the causes of several events that have occurred in history as well as in the present day. The Crucible by Arthur Miller and “Culture of Fear: Poetry Professor Becomes Terror Suspect” by Kazim Ali are both literary works that show examples that prove the honesty of Sinatra’s quote. The Crucible explains more about issues that happened in the past but are still relatable while Ali’s article is about an issue that is occurring in the world today. Fear and logic are bitter enemies since fear can be combated with logical thinking instead of the ignorance fueling the hysteria.

37 Example 3

38 It is human nature to fear the unknown
It is human nature to fear the unknown. It is what clouds and fogs our judgment and thought. Most humans do not understand and fear the unknown and they become irrational and tend to turn on panic mode and try to save themselves; but there are others who can see other side, a different perceptive on the situation. It was Frank Sinatra who was quoted saying that “Fear is the enemy of logic.” If people can just step back and look at fear and mass hysteria from all sides, they would not have to fear the unknown. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and Brain Handwerks’s “2012 Prophecies” people are afraid and fear what they do not know or understand but others have enough common sense to see how fear controls people like a puppet.
