1 5 Addition with Dissimilar Units

2 Sometimes we must add lengths which are not given in the same units,
such as “Five foot two, eyes are blue, has anybody seen my gal?” Is this his gal? Is this his gal?

3 ( ) 12 in. 5 ft. = in 60 1 ft. 5 ft 2 in + 60 in 2 in + 62 in.
We’ll start with simple additions using large lengths. How many inches are five feet and two inches? What are the factors? So, five foot two is? Which is the same as? So, the final answer is? What are the units in the numerator? What is the first step? So, how many inches are five feet? How many inches are five feet? What are the units in the denominator? Write the units of the desired quantity. Convert all measurements to the same units Write the given quantity Write the unit factors. ( ) 12 in. 5 ft. = in 60 1 ft. 5 ft 2 in + 60 in 2 in + 62 in.

4 Adding metric measurements in different units is easier.
For example, what is 2.53 meters plus 26 cm. Then convert meters to centimeters and rewrite the addition. Finally do the addition. Or, convert centimeters to meters, then rewrite the addition Set up the addition in columns. Then do the addition 2.53 m 26 cm + 253 cm 26 cm + 2.53 m .26 m + 279 cm 2.79 m

5 For some calculations we need to add zeros which are not significant.
What is m plus cm plus 42 mm? How many millimeters is 42 mm? And the final answer is? How many meters is 21.3 centimeters? How many meters is 42 millimeters? How many millimeters is .342 m? And the final answer is? How many millimeters is 21.3 cm? What is the first step? What is the second step? Write the addition in columns. Next, let’s convert all of the measurements to meters. Convert all of the measurements to the same unit. First let’s convert all of the measurements to millimeters. The zero in .042 is, of course, not significant. m 21.3 cm 42 mm + 342 mm .342 m 213 mm .213 m + 42 mm + .042 m 597 mm .597 m

6 For some calculations we need to add zeros which are not significant,
and we need to be careful of them when determining sig. figs. What is m plus 21 cm plus 42 mm? How many meters are in 21 centimeters? Is there an easy way to see this? What is ? But is that the final answer? How many meters are in 42 millimeters? So, what is the final answer in units of millimeters? What is I don’t what + 2? Then, what is ? What next? So, what is the final answer in units of meters? And how many significant figures in both numbers? Is the zero in 210 mm significant? Doing the numerical addition gives? How many millimeters are in .342 m? Shall we convert all of the measurements to millimeters? What is the first step? How many millimeters are in 42 cm? How many millimeters are in 21 cm? Now add the numbers column by column It is “I don’t know what.” There are 2 sig. figs. for both numbers. Insure that the decimal points are lined up In fact, that zero is an “I don’t know what” Yes, convert the measurements to meters. Both numbers refer to the same measurement! m 21 cm 42 mm + 342 mm m 210 mm m + 42 mm + m 594 mm . 5 9 ??? 590 mm .59 m
