Why My Plate?? An effort to make it easier to figure out balanced, nutritious meals An improvement on the complex and confusing food pyramid 5/23/2018

My Plate Forget about measuring serving sizes
chicken the size of a deck of cards?? Half of plate with vegetables and fruits, more veggies than fruits Half of plate with grains and proteins (lean), slightly more grains, whole grains 5/23/2018

My Plate Serve fat free or low fat 1% milk and water, rather than sugary drinks When buying pre-packaged foods, choose low in sodium Do not serve oversized portions 5/23/2018

Pyramid vs Plate Pyramid had 5 food groups and oils, some stripes thicker than others and then stairs on the side for working out. But it was hard to tell how much to eat. Plate makes planning easier, by looking at plate it is easy to tell how much of plate to fill up. It is a divided plate, no food group over powers another. Discourages “super-sized” portions, which lead o weight gain and obesity. 5/23/2018

Change? Even though the icon changed from the pyramid to my plate the message is the same. Still eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats or other sources of protein and low fat dairy products. Oils are important in small amounts, but not on my plate. These are empty calories, meaning they add calories, but have little or no nutritional value. Exercise is still important, at least 60 minutes daily!!!! 5/23/2018

Always a balanced meal? Do you always have to have your plate full with each food group? NO!!! Try to eat a variety of food groups at each meal If you miss one, then maybe eat a snack to fill it in Yes, snacks are always a good idea 5/23/2018

My Plate The goal is to think of my plate as an entire day’s worth of eating Throughout the day try to make: half of your foods are fruits and vegetables half are grains and proteins An occasional treat is fine Limit empty calories!!!! 5/23/2018
