6 Breaking down a question
Betty is 70 years old and has been retired for 5 years. She has a good relationship with her 2 daughters who both live near her and keep an eye on her. She lives on her own and has been divorced for 20 years. She has recently been having very bad back pain and finds it difficult to walk for longer than 15 minutes. A year ago she joined a creative drawing group where she has formed a relationship with Ian who is a 75 year old widower. Betty’s mum is called Margaret and she is 93 years old. She has dementia and has recently gone into a care home. Betty and Margaret have always been close even though they live 200 miles apart. Betty has an older sister called Ann. Betty and Ann do not get on but Ann lives near their mum Margaret. Ann has been the main support for Margaret and has arranged all her care needs. Ann has told Betty that she needs to share some of the responsibility for caring for Margaret as she can’t do it all on her own. Betty is thinking about moving closer to both Ann and Margaret.

7 Assess the possible impact of moving closer to her mum and sister on Betty’s development and on her relationships (8) Betty’s Development (What?) Impact Positive Negative (Because?) Relationships (Who?) Physical Intellectual Emotional Social
