Building Organic molecules #2
The black beads are Carbon The white small beads are Hydrogen Red beads are Oxygen

Follow these directions
The first slide will give you the name of what you are to build and maybe a hint. The answer is on the next slide. Do not look ahead until you have built the model This is what your test will be like. Working with a partner, building models. If you just flip though the powerpoint and do not build the models you are only making the test harder for yourselves.

1. Butanoic acid

Butanoic acid has a carboxylic acid connected to the last of a 4 carbon chain. One Oxygen (red bead) is attached with a double bond. The other oxygen is attached with a single bond to the carbon and a single bond to a hydrogen

2) Methanal

Meth- is the prefix for one carbon an= single bonds al = Aldehyde which has a double bond oxygen off the carbon.

3) Butanone

But is the prefix for a 4 carbon chain. an=single bonds
But is the prefix for a 4 carbon chain. an=single bonds. one ending is for a Ketone which has a double bond oxygen off an inner carbon. No number is needed for this compound because any way it is turned it is off the 2nd carbon.

4) Methanol

Meth is the prefix for one carbon, an for single bonds, ol for alcohol which is an oxygen attached to carbon and a hydrogen.

5) Diethyl ether

Two ethyl (2 carbon) branches on ether side of an oxygen

6) 3-pentanol

Pent=5 carbon chain, an=single bonds, ol = alcohol (Oxygen bonded to hydrogen) off the 3rd carbon.

7) Methanoic acid

Meth=1 carbon, an=single bonds, oic acid= carboxylic acid (oxygen double bonded to a carbon with another oxygen and hydrogen)

8) Methyl propyl ether

Methyl = one carbon branch, propyl = 3 carbon branch, ether on either side of an oxygen

9) 2-methyl pentanal

Pent=5 carbons in the main chain, an=single bonds, al = Aldehyde (Oxygen double bond on the end carbon) 2-methyl = a single carbon branch off the 2nd carbon.

10) 2-pentanone

Pent=5 carbon chain, an=single bonds, one=Ketone (a double bonded oxygen off the 2nd carbon)
