Art in the Classroom 1893 Residents of Bourbon County, Kentucky cotton, wool, silk, velvet, lace, ribbon, silk thread, paint, chromolithographic paper decals, and canvas 85 x 72 1/4 in. (215.9 x cm.) Smithsonian American Art Museum Gift of Herbert Waide Hemphill, Jr We chose this piece of artwork as the focus of our collaborative lesson because it offers great range for student individualization and collaboration. Since we want to make a connection to our home, the symbol chosen will not be fans, but the Fleur De Lis.

Physical Art Piece The top three sections will reflect genetic traits of the mother on the left, the father on the right and the child in the center. The center band will be the child’s name or a symbol they identify with self expression. The bottom three sections will reflect a link to their family culture and heritage. The surrounding four quadrants will be a comparision and contrast of the child’s attributes to that of their parents.

PODCAST

Art & Technology Students will research their culture, its traditions, and details about their heritage and compose an essay. Students will also research the history of quilts and why they are important to our history to be able to appropriately converse with the museum docent during a later video conference. A script for a podcast will be written, edited and rehearsed. Students will make a podcast of their quilt square, explaining each component. A Glogster page will be designed by each student featuring their quilt square, the podcast embedded on the page as well as a copy of the essay of their research with any graphics/images they choose to include about the experience. The students will also do a video conference with the Smithsonian Museum about various quilts they have and what they represent.

Conclusion of Project After researching quilts and creating individual squares, we will compile our own quilt of student work for display. The Glogster, with artwork, essay and podcast, will be posted on the parish wetpaint site to be viewed and shared. Students will present their work to parents, peers, and faculty during a school family night. Students will share their knowledge with a docent from the Smithsonian in a video conference while learning more about quilts and their history.
