1
A Boolean Search allows you to specify the logical relationship among keywords in your search.
2
The most commonly used Boolean Search terms are AND, OR, and NOT.
3
AND When you conduct a Boolean AND Search, you tell the search engine to locate all records containing one keyword and another (all records the search engine returns must contain both words, not just one of them). Search For: skateboarding AND parks Result: all records containing both keywords skateboarding and parks.
4
OR When you conduct a Boolean OR Search, you tell the search engine to locate all records containing one keyword or another (all records the search engine returns must contain at least one of the words but not necessarily both). Search For: high tops OR low tops Result: all records containing either or both of the keywords high tops or low tops.
5
NOT When you conduct a Boolean NOT Search, you tell the search engine to locate all records that do not contain a particular keyword. Search For: music NOT rap Result: all records containing the keyword music but not containing the keyword rap.
6
Complex Searches You can use Boolean Search terms in combination to construct complex searches. For example you could search for all records containing the keywords writing or composition and the keyword computers but not the keyword music Search For: high tops OR low tops AND skateboarding NOT rap music. Result: all records containing the keywords high tops or low tops and skateboarding, but not containing the keyword rap.
