Teeth- a brief overview
Mammalian teeth: Three parts: crown (above gum), neck (at gumline) and root(s) Teeth are in sockets called ‘alveoli’ Composed of three layers Enamel (>90% inorganic salts of Ca) Dentin (majority of tooth internally, contains cells) Pulp cavity (connective tissues, bld vessels, nerve) Two Incisors One canine Three molars Two premolars (Bicuspids)
57
Bladder – Layer labeled ‘a’ is folded mucosa (lining) of bladder
Bladder – Layer labeled ‘a’ is folded mucosa (lining) of bladder. ‘b’ is the muscular layer.
58
Testis – cross-section of seminiferous tubules within a testicular lobule.
59
Penis – low-power cross-section of urethra within corpus spongiosum
Penis – low-power cross-section of urethra within corpus spongiosum. Note highly folded and laterally flattened mucosa.
60
Ovary – follicles at various stages of maturation
Ovary – follicles at various stages of maturation. Each contains an egg that will be ejected during ovulation.
61
Fallopian (Uterine) tube – The mucosa of this tube is highly folded and convoluted. Lined with simple columnar epithelium.
62
Uterus – The thick spongy layer seen here is the endometrium
Uterus – The thick spongy layer seen here is the endometrium. This nutritive (secretory) layer is shed monthly if no fertilized egg implants here.
63
Vagina – Due to a potential high level of wear-and-tear here, the vaginal wall is lined with a very thick squamous epithelium.
