1 Lab Component for Developmental Courses: New Policies and Procedures
Guidelines for professors teaching MAT0018C, MAT0022C, MAT0028C, MAT1033C, and STA1001C

2 Why do we do labs? Lab Curriculum
At Valencia’s discretion, developmental courses are supplemented with a lab in addition to class time The lab activities offered are considered as part of the curriculum for the course the professor teaching the course is responsible for assigning and grading the lab activities. The lab activities are located online. Paper lab manuals are not printed. NSF grant information for some MAT1033C and STA1001C More information on this at the NSF faculty training workshop 8/25/16 Julie

3 Valencia Requirements
Labs for developmental Math classes on East Campus appear in the student schedule at a specified time each week. Registration requirements prevent the student from scheduling other courses during this time. Lab times are as follows: Full semesters: Fall & Spring – 50 minutes one day a week; Summer – 65 minutes one day a week Half terms (H1/H2): Fall, Spring and Summer – 50 minutes 2 days a week Late Start (TWK): Fall and Spring – 75 minutes one day a week Diane

4 First Lab Expectations
Lab Policies and Procedures Overview Students sign a attendance sheet stating that they have been briefed on lab policies and procedures (you will receive a copy) Attendance will taken by paper and accutrack week 1 Accutrack attendance instead of paper attendance sheet after week 1 Students will access online lab book If you want a lab activity completed, you may want to assign it as homework for the first lab day due to time constraints Diane

5 Assigning a lab activity for your class
Log into your Atlas account ( Click on the Faculty tab Click on the last link in the Faculty Tools menu, “East Campus Math Lab Assignment Form” Fill out the lab assignment form, ensuring that you have entered your address correctly, you have correctly chosen your assigned lab instructor from the drop-down list, and you have provided thorough instructions on how the lab instructor should conduct the lab Please remember that you must send an assignment for every scheduled lab. Please send these assignments at least twenty-four hours before each lab. Note that you have the ability to attach a file to the lab assignment. If you want the lab printed, please send the activity 1 week in advance Stephen

6 Lab Activities Library Access
Go online to Enter your address—with Log into ATLAS as normal Stephen – add content

7 Other Things Faculty Should Consider
As the professor, you have the option to request that your activity be administered by paper. You have two options: You must submit the lab activity document to Word Processing in time to have the product sent to the mailbox of the lab supervisors or to be picked up by you and delivered to your lab assistant. You must submit the lab activity document through the lab assignment form one week in advance to get the lab printed in time. How do you want your student work submitted to you? Electronically? Paper/pencil? Regular lined paper? Graph Paper? Crossword puzzle labs and/or table labs - you may want to print these? Julie

8 Resources available The lab area has resources available for the students to use if they provide their Valencia ID. Resources available are laptops, tablets, calculators, and Lab Quest equipment. Other resources available are graph paper, scratch paper, rulers, and other similar classroom supplies. Julie
