Program Overview

2 WHAT IS MOVE ON WHEN READY (MOWR)?
The Move On When Ready Program gives qualified high school students ( 9th – 12th grade) the opportunity to earn college credits. Students are “concurrently” enrolled in high school and college (a postsecondary institution), full time or part time. Students earn both college and high school credits needed for graduation while working toward a college degree.

4 WHAT ABOUT TRANSFER CREDIT?
It is the student’s responsibility to talk with colleges/universities regarding their MOWR policies. Georgia Public institutions tend to honor credit earned at any other Georgia public institution provided the student earned a grade of “C” or higher. Private colleges and out of state colleges vary on their acceptance of MOWR credit.

5 Eligible Students Must be classified as a 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grader at Norcross High School Must apply to and be admitted by an accepted post secondary institution NO residency or citizenship requirements Participate through Spring of your senior year Take summer MOWR classes

6 HOW DOES GRADING WORK? If the student fails a class, it could jeopardize graduation and continued participation in the MOWR program! No points are added to the final grade (exception – 10 pts. added to Georgia Tech’s–Calculus II). All MOWR classes are included on the high school transcript. If colleges provide the high school with letter grades, the high school will transcribe the letter grade to the midpoint of the grading scale. A = 95 B = 85 C = 77 D = 72 F = 55 If an End of Course Test (EOC) is required (i.e. Economics), the student must return to the high school and complete that test. The EOC counts 20% of the student's final H.S. grade.

7 FULL TIME OR PART TIME? WHICH IS BETTER FOR ME?
A student may choose to attend an institution full time or part time. Part time MOWR? Take at least one college course. Combine this with classes at Norcross – not to exceed six. Full time MOWR? Minimum of four college courses (between 12 – 15 credit hours). Take Academic and/or Elective courses. Take Personal Fitness and/or Health!

8 MOWR, HOPE and ZELL MOWR Core courses – included in your HOPE high school GPA for both HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships MOWR Core courses – meet Academic Rigor Requirements. MOWR Core courses - weighted 0.5 MOWR courses ARE NOT PAID FOR by HOPE – cap of 127 hours unaffected!

9 GRADE CONVERSON ► 1 - 2 semester hour college classes = .5 HS credit.
Be aware – If students choose to graduate early, they will no longer be able to participate in the MOWR program or attend High School.

10 WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS?
Students get a head start on college. Tuition and book are provided (student may have to pay course related fees). Take classes in the Fall, Spring, and Summer. Enroll in more than one postsecondary institution. CONS Keeping up with Norcross High School information. Rigor? AP and/or IB versus college courses. 95% course grade versus a possible 110% in AP or IB classes. Colleges communicate with MOWR students, NOT parents.

11 BE AWARE!!! A student must meet the post secondary institutions entrance requirements . Student’s responsibility? Register for the correct courses that satisfy high school graduation requirements. Review list of approved courses - MOWR course directory located on the MOWR webpage on GAcollege411.org The student is responsible for ALL interaction with the college. Colleges tend not to speak with a parent or the High School Coordinator regarding the student. Students must have all schedule changes approved by the High School Coordinator. Holidays (Spring Break, etc. ) will be different from Gwinnett County holidays. Participating in NHS extracurricular activities? Register for the equivalent of 2.5 credits per semester.

12 REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE
Must be a Norcross High School student The student and parent must attend an advisement meeting or session – this meeting counts! Male students must meet the federal selective service registration requirements. Students must apply to and be accepted by the institution (college, university, technical college). Upon acceptance, the student must meet with the High School Dual Enrollment coordinator to complete the Move On When Ready Student Participation Agreement. Next , the student completes his/her part of the MOWR electronic application located on GAcollege411

– search “MOWR” GPA requirement – 3.0 Core SAT minimum scores – 970 Critical Read/Math ACT minimum score – 20 Composite Must be a junior or senior Check site for application deadline

14 Middle Georgia State University GAMES Residential Program (Georgia Academy of Aviation, Math, Engineering and Science) ► Juniors or Seniors in accelerated classes (honors, gifted, AP, IB) ► GPA Requirement – 3.5 Core ► SAT Minimum – 1100 Math /Critical Reading ► ACT Minimum – 24 Composite ► Check site for application deadline

15 WEST GEORGIA COLLEGE – Advanced Academy Residential Program www.westga.edu
► Juniors or seniors in accelerated classes – Honors, Gifted, AP, IB. ► GPA Requirement – 3.5 Core ► SAT minimum – Combined 1150 Math /Critical Reading ► ACT minimum –25 Composite

► – search MOWR ► GPA Requirement – 3.0 Core ► SAT minimum – 970 combined Critical Reading/Math ► ACT minimum – 20 Composite score ► Juniors or seniors only

Search Move On When Ready Can be 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grader! Enroll in Certificate, Diploma, or Associate Degree level programs SAT, ACT, or COMPASS – see website for minimum scores for Certificates versus Diploma versus Degree programs. Preferred 3.0 Core GPA

18 MOVE ON WHEN READY Policies and Procedures Follow these steps!
____1. Attend a NHS Parent/Student Information Meeting - like this one! ____2. Decide if MOWR is the right program for you. ____3. Apply to and be accepted by the postsecondary institution of your choice. Pay attention to their respective application deadlines!

19 PROCEDURES CONT. ___4. Take the SAT or ACT in time to meet the postsecondary institution’s application deadline. ___5. After receiving your acceptance from the postsecondary institution, request to meet with your High school’s MOWR Coordinator. ____6. You and the NHS High School Coordinator meet to create your schedule and complete the MOWR Student Participation Agreement Form. ____7. Meet with the postsecondary institution’s MOWR advisor to finalize course choices. ____8. Student must complete a MOWR application at online version!

20 PROCEDURES CONT. ____9. Provide your NHS High School Coordinator with a copy of your postsecondary institution’s schedule each semester. ____10. EOC required for any college course? Complete the Georgia End of Course Requirements Form with the NHS high school coordinator – exams administered by NHS at the designated time and date. ____11. At the end of each semester, provide the NHS High School Coordinator a copy of the postsecondary institution’s official transcript. ____12. Repeat steps 6 – 11 each semester.
