Fractions and Decimals
Our decimal system is based on powers of ten such as 10, 100, and 1,000.
3
If the denominator of a fraction is a factor of 10, 100, 1000, or any greater power of ten, you can use mental math and place value. Ex: 74 100 = 0.74 7 20 35 100 = = 0.35
4
If the denominator is not a factor or multiple of a power of ten, you can divide the numerator by the denominator. Ex: 3 8
5
Sometimes your answer will be a repeating decimal
Sometimes your answer will be a repeating decimal. Repeating decimals can be written using bar notation 7 9
6
When writing a decimal as a fraction, use the place value of the final digit as the denominator
Ex: 0.15 =

Compare and Order Rational Numbers
A rational number is a number that can be expressed as a ratio of two integers written as a fraction, in which the denominator is not zero. Common fractions, terminating and repeating decimals, percents, and integers are all rational numbers.
12
Not all numbers are rational
Not all numbers are rational. The Greek letter π (pi) represents a non-repeating, non-terminating number whose first few digits are 3.14… This number is an irrational number
