3 Activity Outline Supply Chain & STEM Concept Introduction Hands On:
Build Lemonade Supply Chain Hypothesis Creation & Testing Make & Deliver Lemonade Clean Up Key Learnings Wrap Up

4 Activity Start We are happy to be in your classroom! Introductions
Today’s Goals Learn something new about STEM Learn about Supply Chain Have Fun!

5 STEM Science Technology Engineering Math

6 Supply Chain Source Make Deliver Reuse/Recycle

7 Supply Chain and STEM are Lemonade FUN!
Source Make Deliver Reuse/Recycle STEM Science Technology Engineering Math + = Supply Chain works together with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math to make things happen!

8 What do we need to make lemonade?
Lemons Water Ice Sugar

9 Supply Chain Example: Car
SOURCE MAKE RECYCLE DELIVER REUSE

10 Split Class into Teams (1 Adult/Team)
Lemon (4) Water & Ice (6) Sugar (4) Lemonade Distribution (5) Transportation (5)* People (7)* Your Job: Figure out the order of the supply chain for your team! (*if more than 19 students, create transportation & people teams) After each team determines the order of their supply chain, the next step is to form the entire lemonade supply chain. There are two options: Complete a poster where each child pastes their unique supply chain link into the template (poster remains in the classroom as a memento) (page 10) Create a human lemonade supply chain where each team comes to the front of the class, students form their pieces, and stand in order to make the full supply chain (page 10)

11 Build Human Lemonade SUPPLY CHAIN
Lemon Tree Lemon Factory Lemon Juice Lemonade factory Store You! Reuse/Recycle Warehouse Sugar Beets Sugar Cane Refinery Sugar Water Treatment Plant Drinking Water Plant Ice Ground Water Surface Water

12 Break into new teams Up to 5 teams/class Each team: has 1 adult lead
contains roughly the same # of students should be at their own table Remaining activities are adult led within the small teams The STEM focus on this activity is math intensive, and show the relevance of math in the cell phone industry

13 Lemonade STEM

14 Let’s Talk What type of climate do lemons need to grow?
Sunny and WARM What type of climate do lemons need to grow? Where in Australia can we grow lemons? NSW Coastline South-East QLD South-West WA NT Coastline & Alice Springs Up to how many lemons can grow on one lemon tree? Up to 2,000!

15 Let’s Talk What plants do sugar come from?
Where do sugar beets and sugar cane grow? Sugar Beets Sugar Cane MILD Victoria Sunny and WARM North Queensland

16 Where Does Water Come From?
Water Cycle: We use the Same Water Again & Again Ground Water Surface Water

17 Lemonade Science

18 Lemon Experiments Adult volunteer will:
Get 1 packet for each student and 1 for themselves Get 1 lemon for their team Populate hypothesis sheet based on team inputs Work with team to test hypotheses Help students fill out their packets Ask team how they could reuse or recycle the lemon rind Ensure table is cleaned up and be ready to make lemonade. Lead the lemonade activity giving each student a role(s). Adult only will cut the lemon in half and handle the knife Materials Needed per team 1 lemon 1 jug 1 set dry measuring cups 1 juicer 1 liquid 2 cup measuring cup 1 cutting board 1 knife 1 digital scale* * Ideal to have 1 scale/team, but ok to have 1 scale shared by the class

19 Lemon Science Experiments: Hypothesis (what do we think will happen?)
Let’s guess at what we think will happen: This is called a hypothesis. How much will the lemon weigh? Will the lemon sink or float in water? Lemon volume: How much space does our lemon take up? (Show measuring cups as visual aids for guess: ¼ cup, ½ cup, ¾ cup, 1 cup) Lemon Yield: Will the amount of lemon juice be more, less, or equal to the size of the lemon? Lemons: What do we think we’ll observe with our 5 Senses? See Hear Taste Touch Smell

20 Lemon Experiments & Results
Mass of the lemon: grams Did the lemon Sink or Float in water? Lemon Volume: How much space does our lemon take up? Lemon Yield: How much juice did we squeeze from the lemon? Lemon observations: 5 senses See Hear Taste Touch Smell Ways we can recycle/reuse lemons:

21 Lemon rind reuse: composting
Compost Cycle

22 Making Lemonade Materials/Ingredients we have sourced
2 litre jug Large spoon 1 cup lemon juice from concentrate 1 cup granulated sugar 6 and 1/2 cups cold water 1-2 cups ice cubes Lets MAKE our lemonade Measure and pour 1 cup of granulated sugar into your 2 litre jug. Shake the container of lemon juice concentrate so it is mixed up. Measure one cup of lemon juice concentrate, and pour it into the jug containing the sugar. Measure 6 1/2 cups water. Add one cup at a time and mix thoroughly. Add 1-2 cups of ice cubes and stir. Clean up  and deliver lemonade to our team!

23 Wrap Up Who can remember our supply chain for lemonade?
What did we need to SOURCE? How did we MAKE it? How can we DELIVER lemonade? How can we REUSE/RECYCLE? How did we use Science and Math in our Lemonade Activity? Math: Measuring mass, volume Science: mixing, 5 senses Did You Have Fun? We hope so 

24 BACKUP

25 Follow Up Ideas Continued Learning with Lemonade.
Deliver Lemonade to Your School: Invite a different class into your classroom to share the extra lemonade. Social Responsibility/Giving Back to the Community: Host a student led after school lemonade stand to raise money for your school or charity of choice.

26 Human Lemonade Supply Chain Options
Students form the supply chain in front of the class: Print double sided and laminate re-usable cards on A4 paper Students form their sections of the lemonade supply chain in front of the class and stay in front of the class until the entire supply chain is built. Create a classroom poster that remains with the class: Print a large sized poster template (page 8 with outlines, but no pictures) Paste poster template in a visible place in the classroom Print small lemonade supply chain cards that could be taped to the poster Teams go up to poster one at a time and build their supply chain (power point in parallel) Poster stays with the class.

28 Kit Contents & Perishables/Consumables
Reusable Kit Contents 1 Set of laminated Lemon Supply Chain cards Hand Citrus Juicer (5) Small Cutting Board (5) Small Knife to cut lemon (5) Digital Scale shared by class (5) 2 Litre jug & lids (5) Dry Measuring Cup Set (5) 2 Cup Liquid Measuring Cup (5) Mixing Spoons (5) Ensure kit contents are clean prior to use; washed after use. Consumables to replenish each time Lemon Juice from Concentrate (bottle) Sugar Water Ice Lemons (5) Small Drinking Cups (25)

29 Printables Adult Team Leader
1 Color print out of pages (better to display these with a laptop or tablet at each table) 1 Copy Student Packet Individual Student Packets: Student’s take home to share with their parents.
