3 BI in the LHC and Injectors
Ring LHC SPS PS PSB Total beamline devices 1164 287 81 133 Number of different types 48 45 7 10 In addition Beamline devices in the transfer lines (some 350 devices), fixed target experimental areas, AD, LEIR, ISOLDE, Non-beamline devices, in particular BLMs Racks, cabling control, 7/2/2014 LSC - BI Status

4 Scope of activities for LS1 Beamline activities
~250 different interventions involving beamline devices for LHC and injectors Regular maintenance of moving parts Replacement or radiation-damaged components (viewports, motors etc.) Removal/replacement of instruments for other activities (eg, SMACC, PSB dump, SPS cabling campaign) Resolution of issues found in Run 1 (eg, RF heating, reliability and performance issues) New instruments and modifications requested by OP, projects and other users 7/2/2014 LSC - BI Status

5 Scope of activities for LS1 Other activities
BLM dismounting for SMACC Installation of new SPS orbit system infrastructure Installation of water cooled racks for LHC BPM and BLM systems Re-design of the optical tables for the LHC and SPS synchrotron light monitors SEM electronic renovation throughout the complex Preparation of collimator BPM components Many small upgrades to other instrumentation New thermalised racks 7/2/2014 LSC - BI Status

6 L2, PSB, AD & LEIR L2, PSB, AD & LEIR – so far:
BPM installation (see next slide) BLM cabling – initial issues – now solved (EN/EL) BCT installation Wall current monitor - leak repaired & re-installed WS removal for calibration AD IPM – regrouping of H & V monitors L2, PSB, AD & LEIR – issues: Problem with helicoflex seals and vacuum contamination has delayed BPM readiness Corrosion on PSB WS tanks Decided to keep existing tanks in place & mitigate any further corrosion. 7/2/2014 LSC - BI Status

7 Linac2 BPMs Status Recent issue:
LT and LTB lines completed: 7 installed BI line (PS ring): 2 installed BI line (PSB ring): 10 to be installed At same time - 5 BCTs to be removed for re-winding & re-installed Recent issue: Civil engineering will start the excavation of the PSB Injection area on Monday 10th Feb. The zone will be delimited and access to this area restricted under ALARA 2 rules for a duration of 5 weeks. The BPMs’ installation is delayed Slide: Courtesy J.Tan 7/2/2014 LSC - BI Status

8 PS PS so far: PS issues: WS removal for calibration
Wall current monitor – will not be installed BCT installation Screen in dummy 15 septum for MTE project PS issues: SEM grid 52: Maintenance revealed vacuum leak, requiring rebuild. Made difficult be limited availability of information Re-design of SEM agreed, scheduled for end 2014 Dummy septum 15 screen 7/2/2014 LSC - BI Status

9 SPS SPS so far: SPS issues:
Installation of stripline BPMs to replace resonant BPA pick-ups BGI – Consolidation work in progress BSR – revamp of optical line done New orbit system – fibre installation proceeding well (EN/EL) SPS issues: BWS (wire scanners) see dedicated slide ZS – recent issue reported last week 7/2/2014 LSC - BI Status

10 SPS wire scanners Current rotary wire scanners
experienced RF heating during Run 1 causing wires to fail prematurely Retro-fit solution recently proposed by RF experts. Will now be applied, not yet sure if delays to installation New FWS prototype (BWSRE) In production with MME Baseline to install new chamber in LS1 with scanner to be installed in a short shutdown Current rotary scanner 7/2/2014 LSC - BI Status New BWSRE scanner parts

11 LHC so far BLM dismounting & remounting – huge work (2000+ monitors, cables, trays) thanks to Russian Team from IHEP Protvino BTV removal-repair-reinstallation complete LSS BPM systems in IR 1,4,5,6,8 many changes, in progress BGI, BWS & schottky removal for work Thermalised racks for BPM & BLM – EN/EL & EN/CV 7/2/2014 LSC - BI Status

12 LHC Issues Synchrotron radiation telescope (BSRT) Schottky (BQS) BGI
Needed complete re-design of mirror support due to RF heating, Design now validated following lots of EM simulations - awaiting delivery of components Schottky (BQS) Again required much EM simulation to understand where improvements could be made Problems with initial material choices – warping of foil Re-design complete – production underway – first units shipped BGI Helicoflex issue – solution seems to have been found using different seal BGV, BWS – see next slides 7/2/2014 LSC - BI Status

13 LHC BWS Status Essential beam profile measurement device, using design and components from LEP 1 of 8 removed late in Run 1 due to leak in vacuum bellows Analysis revealed bellows fatigue lifetime too low for LHC operating scenarios Bellows and mechanics re-designed for longer lifetime Issues with bellows and mechanics manufacture have led to weeks delay on baseline schedule Expected ready for installation in April, working closely with MME and MEF LHC BWS 7/2/2014 LSC - BI Status

14 LHC BGV status Beam gas vertexing detector prototype for HL-LHC
2 Presentations to LMC Working on phased installation plan Phase 1 (vacuum sectors mods and services) will be completed April Phase 2 (special vacuum chambers) in production with MME, planned to install before IR4 closure Phase 3 (detector installation) during short accesses in 2nd part of 2014 7/2/2014 LSC - BI Status

15 Status and open issues ~155 of the 250 beamline interventions completed across the complex (62%) Very close collaborations with many other groups, especially VSC, MME, EL have been essential to the success of these activities Now focussing on remaining PS and PSB work Installation of pickups in PSB running close to deadlines due to seal reliability and vacuum contamination issues Dedicated meeting early next week Then SPS and LHC until the summer Re-install and test remaining equipment (SPS-LHC) North area primary target re-build (SPS) Follow LHC-SMACC closures for BLM and BPMs 7/2/2014 LSC - BI Status

16 General issues encountered
Technical issues Damage to equipment during Run 1, often due to working outside of original specifications (eg. Rate of use for LHC BWS, beam intensity for SPS BWS) Lack of information, designs and spares for old instruments Unreliability of Helicoflex seals Schedule issues Heavy loading of CERN workshops (and high prioritisation of SMACC activities) Vacuum contamination issues with many components for injectors New constraints for radioactive material transfer and safety have added a significant overhead for all interventions 7/2/2014 LSC - BI Status
