2 The Kiowa Five

3 Kiowa lived on the great plains.
Picture of buffalo and maybe Kiowa indians--teepees, etc. Kiowa lived on the great plains. Their lives and their culture depended on the buffalo. The massacre of the buffalo destroyed the Kiowa way of life.

4 Early 1900s Kiowa young people attended Catholic school
Lady noticed their drawings of Kiowa rituals.

5 She organized them as an art club.
Their work caught the eye of the head of the art department at the University of Oklahoma.

6 Professor Jacobson invited them to become special students in the art department.
Six Kiowa young people accepted his invitation.

7 Jacobson encouraged their traditional art forms.
He exhibited of their dancing, pottery, and painting around the world. They became the famous “Kiowa Five.”

8 Lois Bougetah Smoky (1907-1981)
She was the only woman in the group. Lois was the youngest member. Some thought it improper for her to draw or paint. She painted only a few years before returning to the reservation.

Lois’s work is now rare and considered very valuable.

James Auchiah replaced Lois when she left the five. “I would rather paint than eat.” ~James Auchiah

Died of tuberculosis Water Bird

12 Stephen Mopope (1898 – 1974) Was oldest of the Kiowa Five Drew in sand until elders let him paint tanned skins Played the flute Painted more works than any others of the five.

13 Spencer Asah ( ) Grew up as son of a Buffalo medicine man

14 Jack Hokeah (1902-1969) Orphaned at an early age
Raised by his grandmother

15 The Kiowa Five pose with Professor Jacobson.
All five were dancers as well as artists.

16 The Kiowa Five Style Depicts rituals, dances, life style of the Kiowa tribe. Includes no background detail. Lays solid colors on solid colors-- ”Plains” of color.
