Quick Overview of Social Studies 7/8
Seriously guys. It’ll be quick – I promise. But it might actually be long…
2
First Nations Who are they? What does the name mean?
Ojibway Creation Story
3
Europe Trade problems Mongol Empire failing hard Scary trade routes
Woah ships! Portugal – “Don’t follow me/Quit copying me” route Stop here and have students start their jigsaw about worldview.
4
So Christopher Columbus walks into the Caribbean…
All jokes aside… Ms. T is not a Christopher Columbus fan. Thank goodness She is, however, a Chris Columbus fan (He made the Harry Potter movies).
5
Europe Christopher Columbus
“Exploration” – Brought to you by the King and Queen of Spain! “Discovery” Why am I putting this in quotations?
6
Central/South America
When Columbus (the explorer, not the director) “discovers” the Caribbean, there are already people there. Does this mean he really discovered it? He leaves the Caribbean, but not without establishing a route to Central/South America that is exclusively for the Spanish to travel there and ENSLAVE THE PEOPLE THAT WERE ALREADY THERE! He is a bit of a drama queen. BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!
7
Europe Britain, France, Netherlands – super jealous of Spain.
Spain is, at this point, the most powerful country in the world. Almost exclusively thanks to Christopher Columbus and his red carpet to slavery. An Italian man named Giovanni Caboto (AKA John Cabot) on a British sponsored voyage heads north (south has been taken) and find new land Proceeds to be very unimaginative and calls it “Newfoundland”
8
Whoops… This land was not newly found. There were various populations of First Nations people already there… Cabot don’t care! Ain’t no Caboto got time for that. He claims it for Britain. Does anyone see anything wrong with that?
9
Mi’kmaq and Beothuk Can you imagine this? You are going about your daily life. You are living the dream. You’ve got a family, a way to get food, shelter, a way of life, traditions. And then this Italian man shows up, declares that the land you live on belongs to “Britain” and proceeds to invite people over to fish away all of your food, and build settlements on your land. Giovanni Caboto: Why did he think he had the power to do this?
10
Imperialism This words means to dominate other lands and people.
Another word that is sort of synonymous with imperialism = colonization
11
3 C’s (Sort of) Of Colonization
1) Commerce 2) Civilization 3) sCience Think of it as a formula for imperialism that the Europeans have found to be fail-proof.
12
Commerce Another word for trade/business
EU brought over new and exciting things! Needs VS Wants – Ding Ding!!
13
Don’t Mess with Britain
Mi’kmaq – traded with Britain Still alive today Beothuk – did not trade with Britain Died shortly after contact But why?
14
Don’t Get in the Way Beothuk people had survived by fishing for their food, and had land that they lived on. The British took over their fishing areas No food The British settled on their land No place to live Beothuk strike back British overreaction = Killing literally every single one of them – except one woman that they had forgot they captured. Shawnadithit – died of TB shortly after her people were killed.

Gone, Gone, Gone How does this make you feel?
