2 Identification of the unused cables
This is a description of the general strategy concerning the identification of the unused cables. In the oldest accelerator structures, the cable ladders are overloaded and it is nowadays impossible to install quantities of cables for a new project. Contents Part 1 : Generalities Part 2: Identification of the unused cables Part 3: Removal of the unused cables: strategy and work methodology Part 4: Responsibilities Conclusions. EN/EL - JCG/

3 Identification of the unused cables
Generalities Unused cables: Definition Cables belonging to an unused system, Cables belonging to an old patch panel not used, Cables abandoned, Cables cut on the cable trays or in the false floor. The examples shown in the photos have to be confirmed by the users. EN/EL - JCG/

4 Identification of the unused cables
Generalities Why ? On site: - Eliminate old and unused system. - Simplify the links between racks and control rooms. If necessary, remove the patch panels - Recuperate the space in the cable ladders and in the civil engineering passages - Eliminate as much as possible the cables containing halogen Documentation: - Updating the layout of the racks and the cable Data Base (cablotheque) EN-EL cable documentation Since 1989, all new cables have been documented in our cable database (cablotheque) Accessibilities for reading possible - request to send to S. Oliger (EN-EL). Between 1956 and 1988, all new cables have been documented in hand-written lists. Since summer 2012, all the lists have been scanned; For accessibility: - Equipment layouts (racks) : EN/EL - JCG/

6 Identification of the unused cables
PS configuration Evolution of the networks Each cable belongs to a system and is connected to the same type of equipment/box/patch panel. Very often, the system is replaced by a new one using new cables/equipment. During the first period of exploitation, the two systems (old and new) are maintained. In the false floor/cables trays, a lot of unused cable are stored/cut. Sometimes, old boxes/patch panel/racks have never been removed. So some very old equipments are subsisting in the PS complex but nobody knows if they are used or not. EN/EL - JCG/

8 Identification of the unused cables
Suggested strategy The users identify their own racks, boxes, patch panels. (System: Vacuum, BI, Ctrl, etc…). Modification of the existing labels on racks, cabinets, etc… create confusion. The unknown systems will be checked if they are operationnel or not. Decision is taken to remove them with all the cables depending from - to be verified. The user complete the ‘Demande d’Enlèvement des Câbles’ (DEC) with the informations found on site or in the cable database or in the hand-written lists. On site, the user put a violet tape on the unused cables on both sides and disconnect the cable from the equipment. Principle: The more the quantity of cables to remove is important, the more this operation will be effective: cost, feasibility and planning. EN/EL - JCG/

10 Identification of the unused cables
EN-EL Work methodology Upon the receipt of the list of the unused cables established by the users. (See EDMS ) Volume estimation of the unused cables Identification of the cable ladders or passages concerned Accessibilities to the cable ladders - schaffoldings, lifting equipment, etc… Estimation of the total length Estimation of the waste of irradiated cables. Price estimation Storage of the irradiated cable waste: containers and storage area. Identification of the starting points Schedule proposal Ressources definition Work Supervisor, transport, RP, etc… 6-9 months Dose level estimation: ALARA comitee Process definition to reduce the dose level taken by the workers. 12 Identification of the unused cables
Main difficulties Identification of the unused cables For the oldest systems, nobody knows … Users would like to keep the cables as reserve …. 3) Cables without numbers, and no documentation …. During the works Electrical risks, Possibility to remove a used cable. Impossibility to remove because of the inaccessibility of the cable ladder, equipment, area, etc… EN/EL - JCG/

13 Identification of the unused cables
Responsabilities (EDMS ) The users have to communicate to EN-EL the lists of unused cables to be remove. The users have to identify the unused cables by a violet tape on both extremities. The unused cables will be disconnected from any equipment and the power cables (230/400V & HV) connected to the earth. Establish a contact with a member of each group owner of cables. Motivate the user for the cleaning of unused cables. Follow the answer of the users about their unused cables. Site coordination with all the other services. In such cases, resolve technical problem: cables shared COORDINATION USER EN-EL has to communicate to the users the informations related to the cables inserted in the cables database (cablotheque) or written in old lists. With the lists of the unused cables, EN-EL will study and present to the coordination a strategy for the removing of the cables. EN-EL will organise the removing of the unused cables with its contractor including: - Preparation of the technical data, - Price estimation, - Schedule and following of the worksite. 14 Identification of the unused cables
Conclusions The identification of the unused cables is now necessary because actually, the cable trays and passages are completely overloaded. The best opportunity to organise these compaign is before the installation/renovation of complete systems. This activity must be supported by a majority of users motivated and interested to collaborate to this project. The major difficulty is the absence of documentation or knowledge of the unused systems. The collaboration with experimented correpondant is very important. The identification of the unused cable is a long process which requires methodology, comprehension of the old systems and pugnacity. EN/EL - JCG/
