Purpose of Alumni Associations
From Alumni Association: A Guide for USAID Missions: Mission Perspectives To provide a sustainable and efficient means of engaging alumni, and To provide alumni with a sustainable means to implement the concepts and ideas they explored during their training experiences. Alumni associations can be beneficial to Missions and USAID in general in other ways as well by: Promoting mutual international understanding Capturing participant data Continuing a dialogue Enabling program evaluations

From: Alumni Association: A Guide for USAID Missions: Alumni Perspectives Giving back in appreciation of their exchange opportunity through promoting mutual understanding between the United States and their home country. Improving their communities and organize community service activities. Influencing decision-making and policy discussions at high levels. Networking, both socially and professionally. Prestige by associating themselves with an alumni association and gaining access to senior U.S. Government officials, high-level alumni, and achievers from both the public and private sectors at alumni-association-only events.

Flag and Logo USAID/Pakistan Alumni Associations Looking ahead: Principles on the Development of USAID Pakistan Alumni Association Suggested Directions Demand-driven - strategy/objectives/activities are driven by the demands of the stakeholders (USAID, association members/board, communities). Subject matters and activities are interesting and engaging for the members (i.e.: so that they want to contribute and participate). USAID programs would of course be a center piece. Serves as mechanisms to provide impactful networking and the (cross) fertilizations of ideas both within and across sectors

Flag and Logo USAID/Pakistan Alumni Associations Looking ahead: Principles on the Development of USAID Pakistan Alumni Association Suggested Directions Leadership (board of directors) has strategy and decision-making authority. Facilitated by TfP in consultation with USAID. Association is decentralized; regional boards responsible for regional activities.

Flag and Logo USAID/Pakistan Alumni Associations Looking ahead: Principles on the Development of USAID Pakistan Alumni Association Suggested Directions National board eventually established to coordinate national-level activities, information-sharing, and coordination with regional associations. Association serves as platform for recruitment/participation of all USAID Pakistan participants. Promotes USAID activities and brand, and shares knowledge and experiences of alumni from USAID.

From Alumni Association: A Guide for USAID Missions An Additional Help: The Alumni Board Recruits/encourages alumni who feel passionately about participating in the association. Invites representatives from all programs. Do not exclude any program, regardless of how small or short term it is/was. Convey all of the benefits of an alumni association. Start with offering basic and achievable ideas.

Once established, the association/board should develop the following foundations: Vision: What the alumni association aims to become Mission: What the alumni association strives to become Goals: What an alumni association will do to achieve its mission Scope of activities: outline the nature and types of activities to be explored Governance information and documents: defining the purpose and status of the association, defining membership, developing organization structure

Illustrative Alumni Association Activities
Roundtables, panel discussions, and TED-type talks discussing the state of play in a sector/region (with or without policy discussions). National or international guests (VIP panelists or presenters) Idea exchanges: thematic meetings/conferences/workshops (regional/national), Presentation of case studies from implementing USAID-sponsored events Cross sectoral subjects such as leadership, change management, professional development. Regional events with counterparts from other countries and/or prior program hosts. Public events on important issues (co-sponsored with government or civil society).

Collaborative events with other associations (e.g.: chambers of commerce). Active social media and media campaigns addressing broader sector discussions (showing the evident link with USAID programming). E.g.: web events and radio shows Podcasts Networking events Mentoring programs between older and younger alumni. Job fairs for members. Social, awards for excellence, and fundraising events. National/regional professional innovation competitions.

TFP Support to Alumni Activities
Coordination with USAID. Assistance with start-up, formulation of governance. Capacity-building of demand-driven and sustainable USAID participant association. Assistance with development of project scopes of work (activities). Administration of grant funding.

Logistical support. Direct administration of national/large events. Development of and assistance with administration of association M&E system. Support for communications, social media, and branding. Capturing (past and present) participant data; facilitating training program and association evaluations.

Next Steps (three to six months)
Revise ToR, manualize, and distribute to stakeholders Articulate basic/general ToRs for regional boards (using association development “principles” as reference). Conduct workshop(s) on vision, mission, goals, governance, roles and responsibilities (for board and members) and scope of activities Develop constitution and governance documents. Develop capacity-building plan, outline priorities. Develop strategic plan, articulate activities, timelines, and grow the alumni association.
