Oceanography - Study of Earth's oceans Ocean Currents
Water Temperature Water Chemical Composition Seafloor Sediments and Topography Marine Life
2
A. The Blue Planet ~ 71% of the Earth is covered by oceans; 61% in the northern hemisphere and % in the southern hemisphere 97% of water found on Earth contained in the oceans Average depth is 3800 m Sea level has risen/fallen by hundreds of meters because of melting ice, thermal expansion, expanding glaciers, and tectonic forces
3
B. Seawater % water and 3.5 % dissolved salts such as NaCl, Cl, Mg, K, Ca + dissolved gases + dissolved nutrients Salinity = measure of the amount of dissolved salts in seawater (ppt) Can vary in location; higher in areas with greater evaporation, medium in areas with greater precipitation, lowest in polar areas because of dilution by melting ice
4
c. Weathering of rocks/minerals ex. feldspar
3. Sources of salinity a. Water vapor b. Volcanic gases c. Weathering of rocks/minerals ex. feldspar Removal of Salt a. Waves/sea spray can deposit salts inland b. Marine organisms use salt for homes (shells), found in bones and teeth. Decomposition then returns the salts used.
