2 When was Your colony established and who established it?
Virginia was established in 1607. John Smith or John Rolfe established the colony with the help of the London Company

3 Why was your colony established?
A group of investors from the Virginia Company of London petitioned King James I for the right to go on a Voyage to the New World. King James I chartered the trip, because he hoped to be able to expand and make a profit from this.

4 What did your colony produce to export and make money?
Tobacco was mass produced and the economy relied heavily on this.

5 Who made up the colonist?
They were the upper crust of colonial society and they were known as the gentry. They were landowners, wealthy merchants, and financiers. Many of them owned slaves.

6 What form of government did the colonists establish in your colony themselves?
A general assembly was established and the House of Burgesses, which was the first legislative assembly in the American Colonies, was created.

10 What is the geography and climate of the colony?
Virginia was located in the south so it had a warmer climate compared to the other colonies. The landscape was mountains, coastal plains, and valleys.

11 What were the overall religious practices?
The virginians were forced to worship the Anglican Church and keep up with taxes.

12 Food in the colony They grew wheat, rice, barley, oats, rye, corn, pumpkins, squash, and beans. They also ate fish, poultry, beef, and pork.

13 What education was available in the colony?
Wealthy parents would hire a private tutor to teach their children and some families would send them to back to England or to William and Mary for a higher education. Families that were less wealthy would sometimes hire a tutor and share them with other families. This made the cost more affordable.

14 What did colonist do for fun?
They had sports, card games, music and plays. The children also had games such as marbles.

15 Was the colony successful or a failure?
The Virginia colony of Jamestown was the first colony that was established. They were successful and eventually became part of the United States.

16 Interesting facts Virginia’s name came from Queen Elizabeth I because she was also referred to as the Virgin Queen. The colony was almost destroyed in 1610 because of disease but new settlers arrived with supplies. Four of the first five presidents lived in Virginia.
