CHAPTER FIVE TEXT MATTERS

"The more that you read, the more things you will know
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go." — Dr. Seuss

TEXT MATTERS Every student is different and is on different reading levels. A variety of text (Type, skill, etc.) should be provided to the students. Not only should it be provided but it should also be their choice. A child will be interested in a book that they choose, so let them choose it.

Long text vs short text Many students in school are given long text to comprehend. Short text such as one paragraph articles and poetry can sometimes be better in teaching comprehension skills. Finding the main idea and various details is easier to do in short readings.

Picture Books Perfect for teaching young children the basic concepts of comprehension. If the content is more mature, they can also be used for older students. Perfect for discussion topics and opinion based lessons

"The man who does not read good books is no better than the man who can't." — Mark Twain
