Use common roots and affixes when attached to known vocabulary Have students share with partners the object then call on 3 non volunteer to share today’s objective

2 Discuss with your partner the prefixes in each of the following words
Unwrap Redecorate Remake Allow students to share with partners. Have A tell B and B tell A. Walk around and make sure students are sharing ideas Allow about 2 minutes for discussion Then call on a volunteers to share responses

3 Root Words and Affixes A root word is a word without any word parts added to the beginning or end. Example: unwrap redecorate remake Concept development continued Review the meaning of cause and effect structures and the signal words and model identifying the structure of the sentence and identifying the signal words that signaled cause and effect Ask students what can readers expect when reading and cause and effect text Have students partner share and call on non volunteer What are some signal words Have students partner share Call on non volunteers

Good readers use root words to understand meaning of words Read the importance and have students share other reasons why it is important to know text structures of expository text

6 Rules When a root word ends in a silent "e", the e is               dropped before adding a suffix.    (ex.) un + bake + ed     becomes    unbaked  When a root word ends in a consonant, the consonant is "doubled" before adding a suffix beginning with a vowel.                   (ex.) re + run+ing     becomes    rerunning Skill Development continued Discuss rules for them to remember and use think pair so students can discuss rules

Directions With a partner, choose a root Find words that contain your root word with in the dictionary On the Christmas ornament write your new words At the bottom of the page choose two of your and write a sentence Guided Practice
