1 Environmental Concerns in Europe
SS6G9A

2 Acid Rain in Germany Ruined nearly half of Black Forest
Damaged soil and trees Many diseased trees Sulfur and nitrogen eat hole in buildings in statues Pollutes rivers, kills wildlife

3 Main Source of problem Smoke from factories and power plants
Cars and buses burning gasoline and diesel Manufacturing: mostly coal burning More cars than people in other countries: auto emissions Nature: toxic smoke from plants carried in air currents

4 Working on Problem Replacing coal burning factories with water power
Passed laws to reduce emissions from automobiles and factories Factories switching to cleaner fuel Developing new types of energy Leading producer of wind turbines and solar power technology

5 Air Pollution in United Kingdom
Smog, an air pollution caused by sunlight acting on the gases from automobiles and factories Great Smog of 1952 Major natural resources: oil, natural gas, coal: used in manufacturing Use of coal decreasing

6 In past major source was smog
Today exhaust from gasoline and diesel Asthma and pneumonia linked to emissions Concerned about health Blackens buildings and threatens wildlife

7 Chernobyl - the dead city
On April 25th -26th, 1986 the World's worst nuclear power accident occurred at Chernobyl in the former USSR (now Ukraine). A chain reaction in the reactor went out of control creating explosions and a fireball which blew off the reactor's heavy steel and concrete lid. The Chernobyl accident killed more than 30 people immediately, and as a result of the high radiation levels in the surrounding 20-mile radius, 135,000 people had to be evacuated….forever. The abandoned city. Note the reactor in the background
