Overview of the Expo Starting last year, our STEAM Expo is now a showcase of STE(A)M thinking and problem solving. You can work individually or in groups up to 4 students. Please have only one team member register your group. You will choose a problem to research and follow the engineering design process to solve your problem.
3
The Engineering Design Process
4
Ask a question/ Identify your problem
Possible Problems/Challenges Sports Designing new equipment Develop / design new lightweight materials that will be more comfortable and withstand greater impacts or forces Music Develop a new instrument; revise an old; devise a way to carry it Milltown traffic problems in hallway over crowded parking lots
5
Ask a question/ Identify your problem
Environment Design/develop a way to protect animals/plants from becoming endangered/extinct Design/develop a way to monitor or help lower air and/ or water pollution Design/develop new forms of energy Design/develop a way to conserve, filter or preserve water Design/develop a way to stop rain forest destruction Technology Design/develop a new app Design a new way to travel Other Design a better bridge, road, home
6
Plan Draw a diagram of how you will solve your problem. Your diagram must be easy to understand, detailed, and clearly labeled with materials you will use. Your diagram of the design must be included in your final presentation
7
Create/Test/Improve You will follow your plan to build a prototype to help you solve your problem Test your prototype to determine its success Your prototype can be made out of recycled materials Learn from your mistakes to help you rebuild/refine your prototype Your final presentation must include: Display of your prototype Pictures or video of testing
8
Present/Communicate Your Ideas
Each project will need to be presented. If you are working with more than one partner please remember that everyone will have to be a part of your presentation. To help you during your presentation you may use a poster, a tri-fold, a laptop, a video, or an ipod just to name a few possible items. Please be sure to bring extension cords if you need access to electricity.
9
Research and Imagine During this stage you will:
Learn about your topic through research Gather data about your topic Imagine different ways to solve your problem Choose an idea you want to use
10
Present/Communicate Your Ideas
Each project will have a 3ft by 4ft table space. If you require more room or floor space please let us know on the registration form. Since most of the tables are not against the wall a tri-fold board is helpful to display information. They can be purchased at craft stores and office supply stores
