1 Wonderworld Label

2 The global label market
The global market for printed labels is worth € 28 billion (2014) and still is growing by an average of 4% each year. Australia / NZ 2 % Middle East / Africa 4% LATAM 6% CUSA 26% Asia 35% Eastern Europe 4% Europa 24% The global market for printed labels is worth € 28 Billion. The major market being Asis followed by CUSA and Europe Strongest growth is shown in Asia and as well Eastern Europe. Der globale Markt für gedruckte Etiketten beziffert sich auf rund 28 Mia €. Der grösste regionale markt ist dabei Asien gefolgt von CUSA und Europa Märkte mit dem stärksten Wachstum sind Asien und Osteuropa

3 Volume Labelprinting Germany
Total volume in 2014 was Mio €. That refers to a growth of 3,5 % compared to 2013. 2015 the total volume within the first six months was around 616 Mio €. 5 The global label market
Overview of the label market by printing technology In the label industry the dominant printing technology is flexography followed by Offset. Whilst Letterpress is globally strongly declining, digital printing is catching up fast

6 Serving all major industry sectors

7 Variety of label applications
No-label look In-Mould World of Labels Self Adhesive Wet-Glue Wrap around Shrink Sleeve Image source: Siegwerk There is a big variety of labels: Self-adhesive Wraparound Sleeves In-Mould or wet glue Labels Dominant application is the self-adhesive labels which counts for 65% of all applications.

8 Variety of substrates World of Labels Shrink Sleeve

9 From blank substrate to finished product

Hybrid prinintg presses allows producer to combine advantages of different application technologies to get the best result of all technologies. Printing presses for label printing are the most versatile machines in the market. From unprinted material at the unwider to die-cutted high quality labels at the end. Unique technology with possibilty to change the units/application technologies as required.

10 Different printing technology allows versatile effects in one pass!
Flexo printing Gravure printing Screen printing Offset printing Image source: FlintGroup Due to the simple handling and reduced costs, flexo printing is still the main technology in the label/ narrow web industry. The demand for fine halftone printing, brilliant (mirrow) silver or high opaque areas are the applications fields for gravure (silver) screen (opaque white or tactile effects) and offset technology.

11 Printing technology The thickness of the ink film is, depending on the selceted printing technology various. For example: If you like to print a high covering white solid area you will need up to three units to achieve the target with offset printing, if you choose flexo printing you achieve the same level of opaqueness with two units and with one unit if you use screen printing.

12 Printing technology UV UV-LED Infrared Electron Beam Curing methods
Image source: Dr. Hönle / UVEBWEST.COM/ Sun Chemical The four following curing methods are used in the label industry UV-LED LED curing is, compared to the other well established systems, the newest technologie in this field. LED-UV units are more energy effiecent and have a extended lifetime than other systems. The narrow spectrum of emitting radiation is one draw back of this systems, thereby the range of useable raw materials and PI´s are limited. Electro Beam curing works with a beam of high energy electrons, this high enery electrons cause a reaction in the ink film and start the polymerization. EB inks do not need a photoinitiator but the equipment for EB curing is really expensive and there is also a danger because EB curing producing x-rays. Infrared or hot air dryer emit hot air to the wet film and accelerate the drying process only used for waterbased and solvent based inks.

13 Finishing Image source: ECKART GmbH Due to the wide range of finishing possibilties narrow web printing presses are able to produce refined labels as requested from spirit or cosmetic industry.

14 Metallic effects Image source: Marabu GmbH & Co. KG Metallic effects can be applied with all printing technologies, due to the ink film thickness and used silver pigments the effect can be very brilliant. Special silver effect called „mirrow silver“ is achievable with gravure printing.

15 UV-reactive ink Image source: Marabu GmbH & Co. KG Under exposure of daylight these special pigments are not visible for the human eye. If the pigments irradiated with UV-light the pigments are reacting and start to glow. Inks of this type are usually used for security printing. Available pigments can be change from transparent to yellow, blue, green and red.

16 gloss / matt effect varnish
UV gloss varnish UV structure varnish gloss / matt effect varnish Image source: Jänecke & Schneemann Druckfarben GmbH Matt/ gloss coatings are the most common finishing mehtod, due to the requirement of the end use coatings protect the surface against mechanical influeneces or other environmental forces. Opitcal effects like drip off varnish, matt coating or other special applications are manly used in the cosmetic or beverage market.

17 Varnish 3D – effects Image source: Marabu GmbH & Co. KG Due to the high ink laydown tactile varnishes can be applied with screen printing units, this effect is well known for braille applications.
