Genesis 3: (p 5) So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you will be punished You will grovel in the dust as long as you live, crawling along on your belly. From now on, you and the woman will be enemies, and your offspring and her offspring will be enemies. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel. Then he said to the woman, “You will bear children with intense pain and suffering. And though your desire will be for your husband, he will be your master.” And to Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate the fruit I told you not to eat, I have placed a curse on the ground. All your life, you will struggle to earn a living from it Then you will return to the ground from which you came. For you were made from dust and to dust you shall return.”

All your life, you will struggle to earn a living from it Then you will return to the ground from which you came. For you were made from dust and to dust you shall return.” What is the meaning of this account? The Bible teaches us that God is good; He is righteous (that is, He has the quality of rightness); He is love; etc. All these things come from God. He built them into His creation. They do not exist as things separate from God. They came from God. Evil is the absence of good and therefore the absence of God. The choice to know good and evil by Adam and Eve forced a separation between God and man (in fact all of creation) and introduced a lot of suffering and pain, including death. The worst being the separation between God and mankind. It is an eternal separation. But God is also a God of love! He loves His creation and His creatures (especially mankind). So He promised to provide a way to end that separation and restore an intimate relationship with us who have been polluted (made unclean and unacceptable) by evil and disobedience but still keep His perfect goodness and rightness. This account is the first of many promises by God about ending the separation and restoring our relationship with Him and finding forgiveness. Over the course of time, God added many details in the Bible about the what, how, why, and when of His great promise.
