1 Travel & Tourism Long Haul Destinations

2 AIMS OF SESSION Discover what factors affect long haul travel
Understand why these factors influence the decisions of tourists Research examples of factors we have discussed

3 P3 Learners must explain in general terms the travel factors that can affect travel to long-haul destinations. You must make sure that you provide examples/evidence for each of the factors that you are describing. You will be given your assignment brief next week.

4 FACTORS THAT AFFECT LONG HAUL TRAVEL
WHAT ARE THE FACTORS THAT AFFECT LONG HAUL TRAVEL? SPEND FIVE MINUTES LISTING WHAT THESE COULD BE WITH THE PERSON SITTING NEXT TO YOU FEEDBACK TO GROUP

5 TRAVEL FACTORS TIME ZONES/LENGTH OF FLIGHT JET LAG
DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS/OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS CLIMATE SEASONS ENTRY REQUIREMENTS VISAS TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS SAFETY HEALTH VACCINATIONS DISEASE OUTBREAKS SOCIAL SITUATIONS CRIME/TERRORISM

6 TIME ZONES

7

8 TIME ZONES Crossing time zones can be very tiring and combined with the length of a long haul flight this may be a factor that puts people off travelling ACTIVITY You are going shopping in New York. The flight leave at hrs and takes 7 hours. What time will you arrive in New York?

9 LENGTH OF FLIGHT This is another factor that people may consider when travelling long haul. Why will some people be put off? ACTIVITY – 5 minutes Research the travel time to the following destinations: Auckland Bali Hawaii REMEMBER YOU ARE LIKELY TO CHANGE FLIGHTS EN ROUTE SO WHAT WOULD BE THE APPROXIMATE FLIGHT LENGTH?

10 INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE
Some long haul travel means crossing the international date line. This is an imaginary line that separates two calendar days, one after the other. If you cross the date line travelling east takes the traveller back one day. If you travel west, you will be going forward a day.

11 JET LAG Spend two minutes researching the term jet lag.
Write one sentence that defines what jeg lag is and share this with the group.

12 DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a clotting of the blood in deep veins often in the leg. It can be fatal if a clot breaks off and makes its way to the lungs where it can affect the ability to take in oxygen Being immobile for long periods such as sitting on a long haul flight can increase the risk of a DVT Airlines are very aware and offer advice to passgengers about how to prevent a DVT including exercises while seated and moving around the aircraft when possible People who are obsese or who have varicose veins (enlarged veins) are at a greater risk of a DVT

13 WHAT OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS CAN OCCUR WHEN FLYING LONG HAUL?
Spend 10 minutes researching other health problems and a brief description as to what they are. You can work in pairs for this activity.

14 HEALTH PROBLEMS WHAT OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS CAN OCCUR WHEN FLYING LONG HAUL? Air sickness Breathing difficulties Hearing difficulties Constipation (slow metabolism as infrequent movement and lots of food) Dehydration Respiratory infections (recirculation of air can make spreading germs a problem amongst passengers) Panic attacks

15 CLIMATE Tourists need to be aware of climate zones and seasonal variations. You don’t want to go to certain countries when it is the monsoon season or hurricane season. This has been a problem for many tourists as the desire to travel long haul increases. They arrive in Thailand for example not having checked when the monsoon is and then encounter bad weather. Extreme conditions can affect the economy of a country if tourists are unable to visit until the danger has passed and repairs have been carried out. HURRICANE KATRINA – 2005 – ONE OF THE DEADLIEST IN US HISTORY

16 SEASONALITY Planning long haul trips means thinking about seasonal differences. What country is best visited in our Winter? Visitors need to be aware of the hemisphere in which the destination is located.

17 HEMISPHERES

18 INDEPENDENT REVIEW – FIVE MINUTE ACTIVITY
What does GMT stand for? Where is Greenwich? What is jet lag? Is it ahead or behind time east of Greenwich? What does DVT stand for? Name another health problem that might occur during a long haul flight? What happens at the international date line? Which country has a monsoon season? Which hemisphere is Fiji in?
