Note: The rules and structure of BOSTES HSC VET courses vary from the AQF qualification packaging rules. More units of competency may be required to meet NSW BOSTES requirements, than are required to achieve the qualification. This is outlined in the Training and Assessment Strategy (TAS) for your course. The rules and structure of HSC VET courses vary from the qualification packaging rules; in some cases additional units of competency are required to meet NSW BOSTES requirements than are required for the qualification. The Training and Assessment Strategy describes how students would achieve both NSW BOSTES and the qualification requirements using information from the NSW BOSTES Industry Curriculum Framework syllabus and the Packaging Rules for the qualification. Core Skills for Work Developmental Framework
Develop Your Skills Foundation Skills ACFS link Learning Reading Oral Communication Writing Numeracy Core Skills for Work Developmental Framework Australian Skills for Work Foundation Framework (NB:Employability skills now replaced by Foundation Skills ) The Core Skills for Work Developmental Framework (the CSfW) describes a set of non-technical skills, knowledge and understandings that underpin successful participation in work. Participation in work could be as an employee, as someone who is self-employed, or as a volunteer. This set of non-technical skills, often referred to as generic or employability skills, contribute to work performance in combination with technical or discipline specific skills and core language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills. As illustrated in Figure 1, work performance is also influenced by a range of factors relating to the context in which the skills are being applied. The term ‘work’ is used throughout the CSfW in the broadest sense of “activity that is directed at a specific purpose, which involves mental or physical effort”. The combination of LLN skills as detailed in the Australian Core Skills Framework and Core Skills for Work is referred to as Foundation Skills in the Vocational Education and Training Sector. In the school sector these two types of skills are described as General Capabilities and in the higher education sector they are referred to as Graduate Attributes. Each Training Package has a section related specifically to the Employability Skills. Click on links for information about Foundation skills and Core Skills for Work Developmental Framework. How will your learning be supported?
We support your learning through: developing links with industry develop skills in a real industry setting providing a safe and healthy learning environment counselling and careers advisory services Specialist staff are available in schools to assist with: Literacy, language and numeracy skills Students with disabilities Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students Students from Non-English speaking backgrounds If a student requires any reasonable / allowable adjustment to be made so that assessment of a task is possible, to accommodate needs such as ESL backgrounds, literacy, numeracy, visual or hearing impairment, mobility, learning difficulties etc, students should discuss this provision with their teacher. Students will be asked to self identify in the enrolment form at the back of the accompanying handout- it is expected that teachers will organise a private time with students to discuss their learning needs and adjustments that may need to be made. Tamworth RTO 90162 2017

VET Student Induction Agreement and Learner Needs
Reasonable adjustments to delivery and assessment methods will be made to accommodate the learning needs of individual students. If a student requires any reasonable / allowable adjustment to be made so that assessment of a task is possible, to accommodate needs such as ESL backgrounds, literacy, numeracy, visual or hearing impairment, mobility, learning difficulties etc, students should discuss this provision with their teacher Students should indicate on the VET Student Agreement (circle yes or no on the checklist) if they would like their teacher to speak to them privately to discuss their learning needs and modification of delivery and assessment. Note that the methods of delivery and assessment CAN be modified, however the standard required to demonstrate competence MAY NOT be altered. Remember competence is judged against industry standards appropriate to the level of qualification being studied. Tamworth RTO 90162 2017

Fees and Refund Policy for Vocational Educational Courses Fees are set by the individual faculty area. They are reviewed annually as part of the annual budgeting process. All fees are payable at the Front Office. Students having difficulty meeting their fee commitments should speak with the Principal to organise alternative arrangements. Students who leave during the year may be entitled to a pro-rata (proportional) refund of their course fee. This will be in line with school policy. Tamworth RTO 90162 2017

Competency Based Assessment
This means you must perform a task to industry standard You are deemed either Competent or Not Yet Competent Competency Achievement leads to an AQF qualification You will be advised how and where you will be assessed Competence incorporates all aspects of your performance; classwork as well as assessment tasks. There will be a range of tasks including practical work, case study, role play, written tasks… Courses within Industry Curriculum Frameworks are competency based courses. In a competency based course, your performance is judged against a prescribed standard determined by industry – not against the performance of other students. Competence incorporates all aspects of work performance, including problem solving and the capacity to apply knowledge and skills in both familiar and new situations. Assessment involves the integration of skills and knowledge and attitudes. You will be judged either competent or not yet competent. There is no pass / fail. This judgement is made on the basis of evidence that may be in a variety of forms e.g. written tests, practical demonstration, portfolio or assignment. If you are judged as not yet competent then your teacher will tell you how you can improve and will negotiate another opportunity for you to demonstrate your competence. However schools cannot provide unlimited opportunity for reassessment. 2017 Tamworth RTO 90162

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
If you have: Previous work or life experiences Completed all or part of a similar course at TAFE or another RTO Consider RPL for units of competency and for compulsory work placement as well You need to: Provide evidence eg. certificate/competency record Apply to your teacher who will assess your skills to ensure they meet industry standards The decision will be made by a panel who will let you know if you are successful Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the recognition of a person’s current skills and knowledge acquired through prior learning from other training, work or life experience. If you have already completed all or part of a similar vocational course elsewhere, perhaps at TAFE or another school, or perhaps developed the necessary skills at work, your previous results and knowledge may be recognised, and you may not have to repeat that training and assessment. Recognition of Prior Learning Process If you wish to claim RPL, you must complete the ‘Student Application for RPL’. (Please see your trainer/teacher for the application form) You will need to produce sufficient evidence eg a result notice …. or a portfolio of evidence from the workplace The delivery site/school’s VET Coordinator or delegate will support the teacher in making the initial determination of your claim for RPL claim. RPL will only be granted for competencies where you are able to demonstrate achievement of all of the learning outcomes / performance criteria for that unit of competency. You would then be exempted from undertaking the training and assessment for that unit of competency. Paid work in an industry related casual job can contribute to meeting your work placement requirement. Discuss this with your teacher. Tamworth RTO 90162 2017
16
Examinations The HSC examination is optional for VET students…
…BUT if you wish to obtain an ATAR you MUST DO THE HSC EXAM. You may be required to complete examinations throughout the course. These will be used to determine an estimate for your HSC if required in the event of an accident or misadventure. Some students carry 12 units to the HSC and some do not want a subject counted towards the ATAR . Tamworth RTO 90162 2017

Results and Records Results from assessments are recorded by your teacher and entered in the electronic Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards system called eBOSTES. Year 12 Students can access their results through ‘Students Online’ on the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards website Records are available from your teacher upon request. Competency Records A competency record will be kept by your teacher and this record forms a permanent record of all units of competency demonstrated. Achievement of elements within units of competency may also be progressively recorded by your teacher. Students may request to see this record at any time to determine their progress and seek advice about options for further training and assessment if deemed not yet competent for any unit of competency. School Context: Teachers should explain how competency records are kept at this school and how students can access these. If you have internet access when presenting this induction, you can use the hyperlink in this slide to show Year 12 students where they can access their records on the BOSTES website though Students Online. Year 12 students – BOSTES Students Online
Students Online Link In case internet access is not available when presenting this induction, this is simply a screen shot to show students where to access their results on the BOSTES website through schools online. The NSW Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards keeps your records for a minimum 30 years. If you need copies of your results or certificates, you can go to the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards website and apply for a replacement. Replacement certificates include any vocational certificate and/or Statement of Attainment showing competencies completed, if the course was completed through the NSW school system. If the course was studied through TAFE or a private provider, those organisations are responsible for reissue of vocational certificates. 2017 Tamworth RTO 90162

BOSTES Record of Achievement
VET courses will be listed on your HSC Record of Achievement. The relevant AQF qualification will be listed – eg ‘Certificate’ or ‘Statement of Attainment’ No mark will be listed (unless students undertake the written HSC examination) Qualification Certification Higher School Certificate Record of Achievement Courses within vocational framework courses will be listed on the Higher School Certificate Record of Achievement, together with the unit value of the course. No mark will be listed for the achievement of competency but the Record of Achievement will refer to the relevant Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) ‘Certificate’ and/or ‘Statement of Attainment’, which will be issued separately. For students who undertake the written HSC examination, a scaled examination mark will be recorded on the HSC Record of Achievement. No school-based assessment mark will be recorded. The Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards holds details of competencies achieved and HSC results for a period of 30 years to which students have access if required. Work Placement Compulsory for all ICF VET students in NSW.
If you do not complete work placement you will not have the 2 units recognised by the Board of Studies,Teaching and Educational Standards. This may mean that you will not receive your preliminary or HSC. Usually 70 hours– 35 hours Preliminary and 35 Hours HSC course. Usually organised by a work placement service provider Students must NOT be paid as DEC insurance cover will be invalid for a student who accepts payment. Can lead to employment Consider the employer’s expectations Work Placement Work placement is a mandatory requirement for all Board Developed VET courses. Failure to complete work placement in either the Preliminary or HSC year will render the student ineligible for the award of a Preliminary and HSC credential. Under some circumstances students’ part-time work, in an appropriate workplace, may be used to fulfil work placement requirements. A specific Student Placement Record form is to be used by students wishing to have their concurrent work recognised for the purposes of work placement. Teachers - a specific Student Placement Record must be used for students using their paid employment as work placement for a VET course – this is available from (and there is a hyperlink in this slide to:) Tamworth RTO 90162 2017

Complaints and Appeals
Complaints – where a student is not satisfied with an aspect of service and requests action to resolve the matter. Students are encouraged to resolve complaints and appeals through their school processes. Appeals – Where a student is not satisfied with an assessment (or other) decision. If not resolved at school level, contact should be made with RTO management. Complaints and Appeals Complaints arise when a student is not satisfied with an aspect of service and requests action to be taken to resolve the matter. Appeals arise when a student is not satisfied with a decision made. Appeals can relate to assessment decisions but they can also relate to other decisions, such as whether to exclude a learner from a program. Students are encouraged to resolve complaints and appeals through the school’s complaint mechanism. If they are not satisfied with the outcomes of these processes they should be referred to Tamworth RTO. Tamworth RTO 90162 2017
25
Appeals Process Tamworth RTO 90162 2017
Identify Competence decision Student identifies assessment of competence decision not agreed with. Completion of RTO appeals form. Appeals Submission Appeal submitted to teacher along with supporting evidence. Appeal Assessed Class teacher reassesses competence in conjunction with a colleague who holds the same qualification Notification of reassessment Student notified of appeals outcome. Student may accept or reject decision. If decision is accepted the VET Coordinator notifies the RTO. If accepted all paperwork, inclusive of evidence is stored according to school procedures. Second level recourse If student is unhappy with the decision, all evidence is presented to RTO's framework course writing group for review Decision communicated to student Final Recourse If student is still dissatisfied with the complaints decision they should contact ASQA The Appeals process and Complaints process are similar- with the difference lying in the avenue for the complaint/ appeal to be heard.
