1 What is the science of biology?
Aim: How do we know the difference between living and nonliving things? What is the science of biology? Biology is the “study of life.”

2 CHARACTERISTICS OF LIFE
Cells: Basic units of structure & function Metabolism: Chemical reactions in cells Homeostasis: Internal Balance Reproduction: Produce offspring Based on Universal Genetic Code-DNA

3 All Living Things Are Made Up of
One or More Cells

4 ENERGY and METABOLISM Energy is required to maintain life and for
growth & development. Metabolism includes all of the chemical reactions that occur in an organism.

5 HOMEOSTASIS Homeostasis is the ability homeo - Constant (same)
stasis – balance Homeostasis is the ability of the body to maintain a relatively constant internal condition, regardless of the external environment.

6 REPRODUCTION What do all these images have in common? How are they different? Reproduction: the ability of an organism to produce a NEW organism.

7 Eight Life Functions Nutrition Transport Cell Respiration Excretion
Synthesis Regulation Growth Reproduction

8 NUTRITION All organisms get nutrients through food!

9 Transport Organisms circulate and absorb materials through the cells (food and waste)

10 Cell Respiration Chemical energy stored in nutrients is released during cellular respiration Aerobic – Anaerobic- Cell respiration in the presence of oxygen producing energy. Cell respiration where oxygen is not present producing energy.

11 Excretion Get rid of Metabolic (cell) waste & toxic materials.

12 SYNTHESIS To make or to build from small to large.

13 REGULATION Control & coordination of all life processes (Homeostasis)

14 Increasing the size or number of cells.
GROWTH Increasing the size or number of cells.

15 REPRODUCTION What do all these images have in common? How are they different? Reproduction: the ability of an organism to produce a NEW organism.

16 Features of Life List 4 characteristics that scientist look for when they want to determine life: ____________________________ Label the life characteristic that is represented in each diagram. A mission to Mars has found a specimen and brought it back to Earth. As a biologist, your job is to figure out if the following specimens is living or non living. Explain how you will determine whether it is living or non living. (use complete sentences) Cells: Basic units of structure & function Metabolism: Chemical reactions in cells Homeostasis: Internal Balance Reproduction: Produce offspring Under a microscope Synthesis Regulation Reproduction Transport Excretion Growth Nutrition Respiration _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Living things are made of cells. Living things obtain and use energy. Living things grow and develop. Living things reproduce. Living things respond to their environment. Living things adapt to their environment.
