1 The Curtain of Watergate
By Chris Bunting, Quentin Venable, and Anila Yoganathan

2 THesis The investigation of the Watergate Scandal was limited to the bugging of the Democratic Convention, and the stealing of files in the Watergate office. This was due to the White House’s strategy to insulate the President, and conceal its involvement in the case. The investigation proceeded because of the involvement of the press, who pushed for answers regarding political sabotage and espionage.

3 First Trial Five thieves are arrested for breaking and entering the Watergate complex where the Democratic Convention was held. The White House feigns innocence to knowledge of the crime. Despite the seemingly simple case of Watergate, the case was about to revolutionize how the public viewed the government.

4 Nixon’s Speech Nixon says that “I can say categorically that his investigation indicates that no one on the White House staff, no one in this administration, presently employed, was involved in this very bizarre incident.” Before this, the head of the Committee to Re-elect the President, John Mitchell, had quit his position. Many others in the CRP and the White House were either fired, or quit.

10 FBI and White House Investigation
FBI Director: L. Patrick Gray White House Investigator: John Dean III The FBI was covering the Watergate Scandal investigation, and were working with John Dean. However during the trial, Dean influenced the prosecutors to only question certain people. These people were the first layers of insulation to the White House. Later on L. Patrick Gray came forward and reporter how he had covered up most of the investigation and called out John Dean and Haldeman. Dean began talking because he realized that for the White House Counsel, he was expendable.
