1 Future Science Building and Atrium
MUSIC HALL (OLD MUSIC) HULINGS HALL MUDD HALL OLIN HALL ARENA THEATER CONCERT HALL Future Science Building and Atrium Carleton College Science Facility Schedule Update and Transition Plan September 29, 2016 Presentation Thank you for being here today. Eric Kruse, the college’s owners representative is here with me from Pegasus group; and Bev, Fred, and Steve Spehn are also here from the Core Committee. Our goal is to update you regarding the current plans for the new integrated Science Facility. Because of our ambitious and exciting plans for the new space, this would be the largest and most complicated project we have ever done at Carleton. We are still awaiting approval from the BOT to continue with the next stage of the project, but assuming that we get their blessing to move forward, here is what you can expect to happen in the next year and more. I also want to emphasize that this is proposed, and the plans are not yet firm. We are presenting this so you can appreciate the complexity of the project and also provide us with more information as the plans become finalized.

2 Science Facility—Tentative Schedule
Carleton College Science Facility—Tentative Schedule 10/2 - 11/30 Demo. Mudd Winter bk. Arena Renov. for Phys. Shop Summer 2017: Music to Weitz; Renovate Olin, Hulings, Arena, Old Music 10/14/16 Trustees 12/1/17-Begin New Addition 2020 Project Complete 10/31 - 4/28 Const. Docs. Winter-spring Trustees 9/15/17 classes start Summer 2019 Occupy New; Begin Olin & Hulings remodel The timeline starts with the BOT meeting in a couple of weeks. After this, Carleton will continue to work with EYP on the construction documents. This work will derive exactly from the design development documents that departments carefully vetted over the summer. Eric Kruse has collected the department feedback and over the summer he communicated that to EYP. If you have questions about your space and the plans, Eric is the person whom you should ask. At the same time, you should know that the plan is set. Locations of walls, equipment, laboratories, dimensions of rooms, etc, are not going to change. Because the CDs are essentially a translation of the DDs, Eric and Steve Spehn will largely oversee that translation. IF they have questions, they may contact you, but faculty and staff will largely not be involved in this stage. We are going to begin the process of determining the interior furnishings and layouts, though. We have hired the Collaborative Design group, whom some of you have worked with in planning the transition, to work with us on that process. The Science Planning Group will be involved in meetings with Collaborative Design in late October through February to make these decisions. We plan to expand the SPG to include a few more members of the community outside of the sciences, in order to ensure that we plan a facility that will be broadly inclusive. Along the way, we plan to renovate Arena Theater to hold the physics shop. This will take place over winter break. Once the CDs have been vetted and priced, the project will again require BOT approval to move forward. This should happen sometime in late winter/early spring. Mudd will then be demolished beginning in October of next year, and construction on the new addition will begin shortly thereafter. This will go on until summer of 2019, when we will have a second transition that involves moving Chem, Geo, and Physics into the new construction and the other occupants of Olin into Arena and Old Music. The details of these later stages of construction are not worked out; I want to focus on the early stages We then plan to continue with renovations to Oline, Hulings, Arena Theater, and Old Music Hall, in order to accommodate Chemistry and Geology. Before these can take place, Music will need to vacate M & D and Old Music. Because the Weitz addition will not be complete until later in the summer, Music’s materials will be stored in Weitz. The faculty in Music also will not have offices on campus this summer. 11/ /2017 Interior/Furniture Design
