4. Lets start this lesson by exploring Aotearoa NZ, home sweet home.

5. Lets take a look at why our home is so special.
Our country has many different histories, cultures, people and landscapes.
Lets take a look at why our home is so special.
Aotearoa NZ is made up of two islands.
The north island called Te Ika-a-Māui or The great fish of Māui.
And the south island called Te Waka a Māui or The canoe of Māui.

There are 35 mountains in the North Island and 821 mountains in the South Island! Giving a total of 856 mountains in Aotearoa NZ!

This is lake Taupō in the North Island. It is the largest lake in Aotearoa NZ measuring and was created by a super-volcanic eruption that happened more than 26,000 years ago!!

Aotearoa NZ is filled with different kinds of beaches. Some beaches have black sand, gold coloured sand and white sand.

Maybe its learning about the history of NZ. There are many Māori and English names given to towns, cities, mountains, rivers and harbours in Aotearoa NZ, all with rich history and heritage.
Maybe its learning about or experiencing Māori culture through Te reo (Māori language), Haka (dance), Waiata (song) and Toi Māori (Māori art/craft).
