MECHANICS OF THE FORWARD STRAW TUBE TRACKER (preliminary) Federico Evangelisti INFN - Ferrara
GSI - 7/11 dicember 2009
2
We have studied the mechanical support and mounting method for the tracking stations DC5 and DC6.

3
We have designed a support that includes both chambers.
DC6 DC5 DC5 DC6 (side view) main frame GSI - 7/11 dicember 2009 Federico Evangelisti
4
The support is mainly made in steel standard profiles.
The structure is completely disassembled in order to facilitate the transport. main frame GSI - 7/11 dicember 2009 Federico Evangelisti
5
In each chamber the straws plane is divided into two principal parts.
Every part is composed of two layers: on the first part there are a vertical layers, on the second there are a tilted (±5°) layers. Part 1 (layer 1-2) with vertical layers. One layer in front and one in back. Part 2 (layers 3-4) with tilted layers. One layer in front and one in back. Layer 4 Layer 3 Layer 2 Layer 1 (side view) GSI - 7/11 dicember 2009 Federico Evangelisti
6
Each part is divided in groups.
DC5 part 1) n.4 groups of 10 modules each + n.2 groups of 6 modules each; part 2) n.4 groups of 10 modules each + n.2 groups of 6 modules each. DC6 part 1) n.6 groups of 10 modules each + n.2 groups of 8 modules each; part 2) n.6 groups of 10 modules each + n.2 groups of 8 modules each. 32 channels for module DC5 group 10 modules – 5 per side GSI - 7/11 dicember 2009 Federico Evangelisti

There are four rails for each chamber.
Each group is connected to the main frame trougth a linear rail/carriages system. There are four rails for each chamber. rail carriages rails GSI - 7/11 dicember 2009 Federico Evangelisti (side view)

ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE Step 1) Put the modules on the group (vertical end tilted) like Crakow method; (Cracow method from J.Smyrski presentation GSI ) (straw tube module) (group) GSI - 7/11 dicember 2009 Federico Evangelisti
10
+ = Step 2) Fix the handle on the group; (handle) (group)
GSI - 7/11 dicember 2009 Federico Evangelisti

Step 3) Put the group on the mechanical support - put the carriages
in the rails; Step 4) Connect groups with a connection flange; connection flange put carriage on the rails (groups connected) GSI - 7/11 dicember 2009 Federico Evangelisti
12
Step 6) Repeat all steps for all layers.
Step 5) Push all groups of modules in the center of the mechanical support around the beam pipe; Step 6) Repeat all steps for all layers. GSI - 7/11 dicember 2009 Federico Evangelisti

UNDER INVESTIGATION TO BE CHECKED
CONNECTIONS TUBES AROUND THE BEAM PIPE; ALIGNMENT TO THE BEAM AXIS. TO BE CHECKED MECHANICAL DEFORMATION AND STABILITY (this is a preliminary design); CONNECTIONS SUPPORT/PLATFORM. GSI - 7/11 dicember 2009 Federico Evangelisti

CONCLUSIONS THE PROPOSED STRUCTURE HAS THE FOLLOWING ADVANTAGES:
THE MODULAR METHOD MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO MOUNT AND DISMOUNT STRAW TUBE MODULES IN EVERY MOMENT, INFACT THE SPACE NECESSARY FOR THESE OPERATIONS IS COMPATIBLE WITH EXPERIMENTAL HALL DIMENSIONS; MAINTENANCE DOES NOT REQUIRE TO REMOVE THE BEAM PIPE. GSI - 7/11 dicember 2009 Federico Evangelisti
