1 Science Embryology / Structures of Life Lesson 1, day 1: Seed Search
*change slides 19, 21, and 23 if you are using green beans instead of snow peas – green bean slides are found at the end of the show Materials needed: -apple -1 snow pea pod or green bean per person -plastic knife for each person -paper towel for each person - 3 flash cards for each student Teacher: -put seeds in the class sprouter so that you have well developed seeds by the 4th lesson

2 Living Things Yesterday, we started to learn about living things.
What do you call…

3 any living thing, including plants and animals
organism any living thing, including plants and animals …any living thing, including plants and animals? * We learned the answer to a very important big question yesterday…

4 How do you know if something is living?
The BIG Question: How do you know if something is living? Can someone read it for us? We found out that all organisms…

5 …must be able to carry out 5 life functions on their own
…must be able to carry out 5 life functions on their own. Talk to your partner. See how many functions you can remember. Living things must be able to * grow and develop, * to use energy from food, to * make more of their own kind, to * respond to their environment, and to * get rid of wastes. We are going to be studying some particular organisms over the next several weeks. The study of living things has a name. It is called… All living things, also called organisms, carry out five basic life functions on their own. 5

6 biology ..biology. There are many branches of biology because there are many types of living things. For example, the study of all animals is called zoology (zō ŏlogy), and study of all plants is called botany. We are going to study one particular branch of biology that is called…

7 Embryology …embryology.
So, now we need to answer another very important big question…

8 What is embryology? The BIG Question: Can someone read our question?
The word…

9 an undeveloped plant or animal
embryology embryo + ology …embryology is made up of two parts: * embryo + * ology. The suffix -ology means * the study of. That leaves us with the word embryo. Does anyone know what an embryo is? An embryo is a living thing in its early stages of development before it is fully formed. In other words, it is * an undeveloped plant or animal. It is the beginning of life. You started out as an embryo and so do all living things. They just take on different forms. Let’s make a flash card for this important word… an undeveloped plant or animal the study of

10 the study of an undeveloped plant or animal
embryology the study of an undeveloped plant or animal On the front of your card, write the word embryology. And on the back, we’ll write our definition. What is embryology? * We are going to begin by studying plant embryology or, in other words, the beginning of life for a plant. First I want you to take a minute to…

11 Where does life begin for a plant?
Think about it! Where does life begin for a plant? ..ponder the answer to this question…* Can someone read it? Turn and talk to your partner. See what you can come up with. (share responses) Life for a plant begins in the seed, and several of you were surprised to learn yesterday, that a seed is an organism…it is a living thing! So, here is the next important big question we will investigate…

12 Where are seeds found in plants?
The BIG Question: Where are seeds found in plants? Can someone read it for us? Talk with your partner about the answer to this question. I brought a part of a plant for us to investigate today. (hold up an apple) What do you call this part of a plant? (fruit) I would like you to take a minute to observe my apple. Can you remind me what it means to…

13 observe …observe? (call on volunteers)
When you observe an object, you use your * five senses to explore that object. What do you observe about my apple? (make a list on the board or chart paper) Each one of the things we have listed is a…

14 a characteristic of an object
property a characteristic of an object …property of my apple. A property is…* a characteristic of an object. It is…* something that you can observe, including size, shape, color, texture, smell, and other features. Let’s make a flash card for this important word. Write the word on one side and the definition on the other side. Now I am going to give you another fruit to observe. Here is what I would like you… something that you can observe including size, shape, color, texture, smell, and other features

15 Things to do: Draw a picture of the outside of your
fruit. Remember to use the ABCD’s of scientific drawing. ..to do. Can someone read * number 1? We learned about the ABCD’s of scientific drawing in our first science unit. Let’s refresh our memories…

16 A B C D The A, B, C, D's of Scientific Drawing = Accurate
(looks like the real thing) A Does anyone remember what the A stands for? The A stands for * accurate. That means that your drawing should look like the real thing. Does anyone remember what the B stands for? The B stands for * big. You want your drawing to be big enough to be seen clearly. Does anyone remember what the C stands for? The C stands for * colorful. That will also help your drawing to look like the real thing. Does anyone remember what the D stands for? The D stands for * detailed. That means that your drawing should be clearly labeled. Here was our example * of a scientific drawing. Now let’s go back to our… = Big B = Colorful C = Detailed (includes labels) D

17 Things to do: Draw a picture of the outside of your
fruit. Remember to use the ABCD’s of scientific drawing. …things to do. Can someone read * number 2? I have a new page for you to use for your observations. When you get your page, write a… List the observable properties using the appropriate senses (do not eat).

18 …3 in the bottom right corner.
Observing a Fruit Properties: Picture …3 in the bottom right corner. Write a title at the top of the page. I wrote…* If the box on the top left, you will * draw and label your picture. Be sure to include the name of your fruit if you know it. Then on the line to the right of the box, you will list the * properties you observe. Write the word properties on your sheet. I am going to bring you your fruit now. (pass out a green bean or sugar snap pea to each student and monitor as students make their observations – students may express confusion and say that these are vegetables – this will lead into the scientific definition of a fruit later) Let’s share some of our observations. First of all what is the name of the… 3

19 Sugar Snap Peas …fruit that I gave you? *
What are some of the properties you listed for your fruit? (share) When we observed my apple, we only looked at the outside. I think there is more to investigate! I am going to bring you a plastic knife. I would like you to very carefully cut open your fruit along the seam. Be careful not to damage the inside. Use the…

20 (pass out knives and allow students to cut open their fruit)
Observing a Fruit Properties: Picture …bottom of your page to draw a * picture of what you see and list your * properties. Write the word properties to the right of the box. (pass out knives and allow students to cut open their fruit) What have you found inside your fruit? When you list the properties, think about…are they big or small, round or flat, rough or smooth, hard or soft? What color are they? (give students time to draw and write) Properties: Picture 3

21 Sugar Snap Peas What do you see inside your fruit?
The inside of the fruit contains * peas. These are the seeds of the plant. What are some of the properties you wrote for you seeds? So, now we know the answer to our big question…

22 Where are seeds found in plants?
The BIG Question: Where are seeds found in plants? Where are seeds found in plants? *

23 Sugar Snap Peas Seeds develop in the fruit of a plant
Some of you were confused when I told you that I gave you a fruit. Scientifically speaking, a fruit is the part of a plant where the seeds develop. Let’s make a flash card for the word… Seeds develop in the fruit of a plant

24 the structure where seeds develop in a flowering plant
fruit the structure where seeds develop in a flowering plant …fruit. Write the word on the front. On the back, we’ll write the definition. What is a fruit? * Tomorrow we’ll investigate some other types of fruits. Put your sheet in your binder. Then we’ll add any entry to our…

25 Five Functions of Living Things
1 Living vs. Nonliving 2 Observing a Fruit 3 …Table of Contents. Here is what I wrote…* page…* Throughout our unit, we are going to learn a lot of important things. Let’s create a page for our binders where we can keep track of the…

26 * All living things are organisms.
* Life for a plant begins in a seed. * A seed is an organism (a living thing). * Seeds develop in the part of a plant called the fruit. …big ideas that we are learning. (pass out big ideas sheet) We can add a few things already to our sheet. Yesterday we learned that * all living things are organisms. Today we learned that * life for a plant begins in a seed. We also learned that * a seed is an organism (a living thing). Where do seeds develop in a plant? * We’ll keep this sheet in the back of our binders, behind our laminated sheet with our flash card pocket. Just like our flash cards, it will be great for studying when it comes time for a test.

28 Green Beans …fruit that I gave you? *
What are some of the properties you listed for your fruit? (share) When we observed my apple, we only looked at the outside. I think there is more to investigate! I am going to bring you a plastic knife. I would like you to very carefully cut open your fruit along the seam. Be careful not to damage the inside. Use the…

29 Green Beans What do you see inside your fruit?
The inside of the fruit contains * beans. These are the seeds of the plant. What are some of the properties you wrote for you seeds? So, now we know the answer to our big question…

30 Green Beans Seeds develop in the fruit of a plant
Some of you were confused when I told you that I gave you a fruit. Scientifically speaking, a fruit is the part of a plant where the seeds develop. Let’s make a flash card for the word… Seeds develop in the fruit of a plant
